Chapter 20: A New Pet, the Bald Little White Wolf
“Heh.”
“You actually think this ragtag formation can hold me? Keep dreaming.”
The woman sneered, immediately summoning two high-rank Dharma Treasures to blast her way out. But the moment the treasures took flight, her strength vanished. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed unceremoniously into the dirt.
Staring at her unresponsive limbs, terror finally bled into her voice. “What… what did you do to me?”
“Nothing much. Just a little bloodline suppression.”
Chen Changsheng looked down at her with a bored, clinical detachment. “You’re right about one thing, though. This formation is shoddy. I found the schematics for this ‘Broken Formation’ in a dusty old scroll; it took a lot of patching just to get it into a functional state.”
“Its function is quite singular: it suppresses demon bloodlines and forces the subject back into their primal form.”
The color drained from the woman’s face. “Impossible. If the humans had a technique like this, the Daqian Dynasty would have deployed it on the front lines centuries ago.”
“Good grief,” Changsheng sighed, rubbing his temples. “Do you demon girls lack basic common sense? Every formation has its trade-offs.”
“The original version from the ancient texts could suppress Golden Core demons. My ‘budget’ version only works on Foundation Establishment small fry. And as you can see, it’s incredibly fragile—one good kick and the whole thing falls apart. Honestly, if you hadn’t wasted your window of opportunity gloating, you might have actually escaped.”
As he spoke, the woman’s frame began to shrink and contort, her limbs shortening and fur sprouting until she had transformed entirely into a small, pure-white wolf.
Changsheng reached down, plucked the Storage Ring she had dropped, and turned it over in his hand. “How do I crack the restriction on this?”
The little white wolf bared its teeth, speaking in a high-pitched human tongue. “In your dreams! I’ll never tell you. If you have the guts, just kill me now!”
“Kill you? No, I don’t have the stomach for that,” Changsheng replied casually. “But I do have the stomach to shave you bald.”
The wolf’s eyes went wide. “You wouldn’t dare!”
“Try me.”
Changsheng pulled a straight razor from his sleeve.
Swish.
A flash of steel later, a pristine strip of pink skin appeared right down the center of the wolf’s head. Feeling the sudden, cool draft on her scalp, bean-sized tears began to well up in the wolf’s eyes.
“Waaaaah!”
“Fine! I’ll tell you! You monster! How can a person be this cruel?!”
Once he had the passcode, Changsheng upended the Storage Ring. A literal mountain of Spirit Stones and Dharma Treasures cascaded onto the grass. Changsheng felt a slight tug of greed in his throat.
“Well, look at you. You’re loaded. Most Nascent Soul experts aren’t this well-off.”
Without a second thought, he swept the entire pile into his System Space. While the loot was top-tier, he wasn’t stupid enough to use it yet. This girl clearly came from a powerful background; these treasures likely had more tracking markers on them than a stray dog has fleas.
Inside the System Space, however, they were effectively in another dimension. Even if the Heavenly Emperor himself came looking, he wouldn’t find a trace.
Watching her inheritance vanish into thin air, the bald little wolf whimpered, “You have everything now. Just let me go. If it’s more wealth you want, I can get it for you. My father is—”
Changsheng reached down and pinched her muzzle shut.
“I don’t want to know who you are, and I definitely don’t want to know who your father is. If I remain ignorant, I can let you go once my business is done. But the second I know your identity, I have to kill you to keep my secret. Do you understand?”
The wolf froze, then nodded vigorously.
“Good. Now, you need a little makeover to ensure you aren’t recognized.”
Changsheng picked up the wolf with a mischievous, predatory grin.
“No! Stay away! Aaaaaah!”
Curdling screams echoed through the valley, sounding less like a girl and more like a soul being put through a meat grinder.
Night Moon Country, Imperial Palace.
“What?”
“Yue’er was abducted by a human?”
The Silver Moon Wolf King surged to his feet. The sheer Pressure of a Soul Formation stage expert rippled through the hall, sending the lesser demons crashing to their knees in terror. The two Golden Core guards who had lost the princess looked as though their souls had already fled their bodies.
The Princess was gone. This wasn’t just a failure; it was a death warrant for their entire bloodline.
The Wolf King’s fingers blurred as he performed a series of rapid divinations, attempting to track his daughter’s fate. After a moment, his brow furrowed deeper. He looked at the guards. “Losing the Princess is a capital offense. Go to the dungeons and await your sentence.”
“Thank you, Great King! Thank you!” The guards scrambled away, grateful just to be alive for another hour.
Once the hall was cleared of attendants, the Wolf King turned to a corner. “Elder Turtle, your thoughts?”
An old man leaning on a gnarled staff hobbled forward. “This is no simple kidnapping. The moment the Princess vanished, I attempted a grand deduction. The result? Total chaos. Her fate has been deliberately obscured.”
“Such a feat is far beyond a human Golden Core. I reached the same conclusion,” the Wolf King growled. “To interfere with the Heavenly Secrets requires someone at the Soul Formation stage. It seems they came prepared.”
Elder Turtle hesitated. “If it were just a ransom, it would be simple. But I fear they are after that matter. We took half of the Daqian Dynasty’s land in a single campaign; it was bound to draw eyes. And our own borders are far from unified.”
The Wolf King’s eyes narrowed into slits. “The Saber-toothed Tigers?”
“Not just them. The Fox Clan has been whispering as well. They suspect Yue’er is the lynchpin of our plans.”
“Hah! If they want to play games, let them. It’s time I reminded them who actually wears the crown in Night Moon Country.”
Night Moon Country, Imperial Capital.
Chen Changsheng strolled through the bustling streets, cradling what looked like a mangy, pitch-black, bald puppy in his arms.
He looked around with genuine curiosity. Despite being a demon capital, the city was remarkably similar to human hubs, largely because the streets were packed with high-level demons who had assumed human form.
“Sss—!”
Changsheng hissed in pain as the “puppy” in his arms clamped its teeth onto his forearm.
“Let go, you brat!”
“Never! Give me back my snow-white fur!” the wolf muffled through a mouthful of his sleeve.
“I told you, that ink is my special blend. It’s permanent,” Changsheng whispered back. “If you want your color back, we have to keep you shaved until the new coat grows in. And since you’re so miserable, I’ve decided to name you ‘Xiao Bai’ as a tribute to your lost heritage.”
Xiao Bai: “……”
You absolute bastard. Just you wait.
