Chapter 1: Ten Years of Slumber, Things Remain but People Change
“Ptooey! Ptooey! Ptooey!”
Pure white moonlight spilled across the pitch-black earth as a young man frantically spat dirt from his mouth.
“They said golden nanmu wood wouldn’t rot for a thousand years, yet it turned to dust in just a decade.”
“That damned Cripple Li. How dare he swindle me with counterfeit goods.”
After spitting out the last of the dirt, Chen Changsheng stretched his somewhat stiff limbs.
Under the hazy moonlight, one could vaguely make out the bare curves of Chen Changsheng’s backside.
However, at this moment, Chen Changsheng didn’t seem particularly concerned about the fact that he was airing himself out completely naked under the moon.
“System, is the ten-year period up?”
“Replying to Host: The ten-year slumber has concluded. Attribute Points have been credited.”
Hearing the system’s reply, Chen Changsheng pulled up the panel in his mind.
[Host: Chen Changsheng]
[Strength: 1]
[Speed: 1]
[Defense: 1]
[Spiritual Power: 0]
[Lifespan: 80]
That’s right, Chen Changsheng was a genuine, bona fide transmigrator.
And the system he possessed wasn’t some daily check-in system, nor was it some ridiculously overpowered, heaven-defying system. It was just an “utterly ordinary” Longevity System.
As long as Chen Changsheng slept, he would receive corresponding lifespan and Attribute Points.
However, this slumbering period had restrictions: it could not exceed his maximum lifespan limit.
Furthermore, any lifespan Chen Changsheng had already expended would be fully recharged after a slumber.
In other words, if Chen Changsheng lived for eighty years and then went into hibernation,
even if he only slept for a single day, upon waking, his remaining lifespan would be eighty years and one day, not just one day.
Additionally, upon awakening, the minimum cooldown interval before his next slumber could not be less than one-tenth of his total lifespan.
So, theoretically, as long as Chen Changsheng kept his head down and developed discreetly,
he could live up to his namesake and achieve true longevity.
Looking at his newly acquired ten Attribute Points, Chen Changsheng decided not to allocate them immediately.
Instead, he retrieved a set of clothes from his system space, pulled them on, got his bearings based on his old memories, and quickly headed down the mountain.
Ten years had passed. The war should be over.
The sweetheart he had been separated from during the chaos should have returned as well.
……
“Shaobing! Piping hot shaobing!”
Walking through the bustling market, Chen Changsheng felt a profound sense of dislocation, as if a lifetime had passed.
Although the town remained the same, the familiar faces from back then were all gone.
Ten years wasn’t incredibly long, but it wasn’t short either. It was more than enough time for everything to change.
Taking in the town’s changes, Chen Changsheng followed his memories toward a familiar destination.
Soon, he arrived at a farmhouse on the edge of town.
Looking at the familiar structure, the corners of Chen Changsheng’s mouth ticked upward. He called out, “Excuse me, is Nianci here?”
At the sound of his voice, a delicate, porcelain-doll of a little girl poked her head out from inside.
“Who are you looking for?”
Seeing the little girl, Chen Changsheng was momentarily stunned.
“Isn’t this Nianci’s home?”
“I don’t know any Nianci. You’ve got the wrong house.”
A flicker of disappointment passed through Chen Changsheng’s eyes at her words.
Back then, the war had been raging. Nianci was just an ordinary mortal; perhaps she had perished long ago.
Thinking of this, Chen Changsheng immediately prepared to turn and leave.
“Changsheng… is that you?”
A familiar voice rang out from behind him, causing Chen Changsheng’s entire body to stiffen as if struck by lightning.
Forcing down his surging emotions, he slowly turned around. That once-familiar face came into view once again.
Thud!
The vegetable basket in the woman’s hands slipped and hit the ground.
Upon recognizing the man before her, Nianci instantly clamped a hand over her mouth. Tears poured down her cheeks.
“Don’t bully my mother!”
Seeing her mother cry, the little girl immediately rushed out of the house, spreading her tiny arms wide to stand like a shield between them.
Hearing the little girl’s words, Chen Changsheng looked at his former childhood sweetheart with a questioning gaze.
Nianci didn’t shy away from his stare. She merely reached out, slowly tracing the contours of his face.
“Ten years… and you look exactly the same as you did back then.”
“Why?”
Chen Changsheng finally voiced the question weighing on his heart.
Hearing this, Nianci offered a soft smile, lowering her head to affectionately stroke the little girl’s hair.
“After we were separated, I was chased by bandits. Later, he was the one who pulled me out of a pile of corpses.”
“Half a year later, my injuries had healed, and the war finally ended.”
“He escorted me back here. That’s when Cripple Li told me you had bought a coffin from him.”
“Then, I waited for you for three years…”
Nianci paused, a flash of helplessness and disappointment flickering in her eyes.
Taking a deep breath, she forced a smile. “During those three years, he was always there to take care of me. He truly treated me well.”
Chen Changsheng stared blankly for a moment.
Then, a smile of quiet acceptance touched his lips, though it carried a distinct trace of bitterness.
A ten-year slumber was nothing but a fleeting nap to him.
But to Nianci, ten years was an eternity. How many decades did a mortal truly have in their lifetime?
When they parted ways, they were both twenty years old.
A decade later, he still looked exactly twenty, but Nianci was already thirty.
In truth, from the very moment he transmigrated into this world, the two of them were destined to walk entirely different paths.
Pushing those thoughts aside, Chen Changsheng crouched down, patted the little girl’s head, and smiled warmly.
“Little one, what is your name?”
Faced with his question, the little girl turned back to her mother, seemingly seeking permission.
“Tell the un… tell big brother. He is an old acquaintance of mine.”
Having received permission, the little girl answered in a crisp, clear voice, “My name is Li Niansheng. I’m six years old.”
“Niansheng,” Chen Changsheng muttered the name a few times before smiling. “That is a very good name.”
“Big brother’s name also has the character for ‘sheng’ in it, but my name is Chen Changsheng.”
“You can call me Big Brother Changsheng.”
Leaving those words behind, Chen Changsheng stood up and turned to leave.
Seeing him walk away, Nianci instinctively blurted out, “Where are you going?”
Chen Changsheng’s footsteps paused. Without turning around, he simply waved his hand at the mother and daughter.
“My old house is gone, but I see Cripple Li’s coffin shop is still standing. I’ll stay there for a while.”
As he spoke, Chen Changsheng’s solitary figure gradually receded into the distance.
Watching his retreating back, Li Niansheng looked up and asked, “Mother, is Big Brother Changsheng your friend?”
“Not a friend. Just a very familiar old acquaintance.”
“Then who is the Nianci he was looking for?”
“Probably his childhood sweetheart. After all, the name ‘Nianci’ sounds exactly like a private pet name a man would give his beloved.”
“Oh, I see!”
“Then do you think Big Brother Changsheng will ever find his sweetheart?”
“I don’t know. Perhaps he already has.”
Nianci murmured softly to herself. She then looked down at Li Niansheng and smiled. “Alright, your father will be back soon. Let’s go cook him something delicious, okay?”
“Okay!”
Li Niansheng cheered happily, skipping toward the kitchen.
