Chapter 26: The Wolf King Appears, Turtle Elder Strikes Fatally
Countless eons ago, at regular intervals, a colossal hand would descend from the heavens, snatching up the living beings of the earth.
The denizens of the earth fought back with suicidal desperation, but their struggles were utterly in vain.
Until one day, someone discovered a formidable power.
The mural did not explain the origin of this force, but it clearly depicted all living beings uniting under its banner to shatter the giant hand in the sky.
At first, the world rejoiced, believing this power to be a divine blessing.
But soon enough, they discovered a horrifying truth: this power was far more terrifying than the heavenly hand ever was.
At this point, the mural abruptly cut off.
Lin Hu’s eyes widened. “Do you have any other rubbings?”
“Hurry up and take them out! What happened next?”
“My apologies,” Chen Changsheng said, spreading his hands helplessly. “You’re looking at every rubbing I possess.”
“We’ve barely scraped together a tenth of the whole mural. To uncover the full story, we’d need to gather the patterns from all eighteen Bronze Ancient Halls.”
Hearing this, Lin Hu stared hard at the final, floating segment of the image.
Though the mural was heavily fragmented and riddled with blank spaces, the concluding section remained relatively intact.
The ominous power had been sealed and suppressed beneath the eighteen Bronze Ancient Halls.
These eighteen halls were entrusted to eighteen different races as wardens. Two of those wardens were the human and demon races.
As for the identities of the remaining sixteen races, time had long since eroded them away.
Having grasped the gravity of this ancient lore, Lin Hu and Hu Zhan silently shifted, sealing off every one of Chen Changsheng’s escape routes.
Chen Changsheng merely clicked his tongue.
“Considering I just solved a millennia-old mystery for you, could you at least let me finish talking before you try to kill me?”
Hu Zhan chuckled darkly. “Your intellect is genuinely terrifying, Brother Chen.”
“Such monstrous talent would be treated as an absolute treasure anywhere in the world.”
“Which is exactly why I can’t figure out why you really came to the Night Moon Country to participate in this recruitment assembly.”
“And don’t insult my intelligence by claiming you came out of admiration for Princess Wanyan.”
“Naturally, I have my reasons for coming to the Night Moon Country. Why else would I travel this far?”
“But before I bare my soul, I’d like to share the story as I’ve pieced it together.”
“The number of cultivators in the Night Moon Country suddenly spiked, allowing you to thoroughly rout the Daqian Dynasty’s forces.”
“This bizarre anomaly puzzled me the entire way here. But after arriving in the Night Moon Country…”
“…I learned something else. Your country recently underwent a massive internal purge.”
“That made even less sense. A massive civil purge should cripple a nation, yet your country’s overall strength inexplicably skyrocketed instead.”
“Simultaneously, I discovered that a high-level traitor likely exists within the Daqian Dynasty.”
“All these threads seemed connected, yet a crucial linchpin was missing.”
“Until now. I’ve finally found the key.”
Chen Changsheng leisurely strolled back over to the Bronze Ancient Hall.
“All eighteen Bronze Ancient Halls depict the exact same narrative, but time has ravaged them.”
“Piecing together the full truth from a single hall is impossible.”
“Therefore, I have every reason to suspect that the Daqian Dynasty’s traitor defected to the Night Moon Country carrying this exact secret.”
“Furthermore, did you notice that this Bronze Ancient Hall wasn’t just weathered? It was deliberately vandalized.”
“And the heavily damaged section just happens to be the exact part depicting the living beings borrowing that ominous power.”
Hearing this, an icy knot of dread suddenly formed in Hu Zhan’s gut.
“What exactly are you trying to say?”
Chen Changsheng simply plopped down onto the ground, looking entirely too relaxed.
“I’m saying you shouldn’t bother trying to kill me, because it’s not your turn.”
“Judging by your reactions, neither of you knew the true secret behind the Night Moon Country’s sudden surge in power.”
“If I’m not mistaken, you two came into this forbidden land specifically to dig up that secret.”
“Well, now you know it. Do you honestly think the person who deliberately destroyed these carvings is going to let you walk out of here alive?”
“Excellent!”
“Such a brilliant young mind is truly a rarity in this world. You have genuinely opened this King’s eyes!”
The moment Chen Changsheng finished speaking, the Wolf King and the Turtle Elder strolled out from the nearby shadows.
Seeing the Wolf King materialize, panic flashed across Hu Zhan and Lin Hu’s faces.
Hu Zhan immediately stepped forward, cupping his fists in deep respect. “Reporting to the Wolf King! This human is a spy. We were just about to apprehend him and present him to you.”
The Wolf King merely sneered.
“Your fox clan always did love playing these petty little games. You instigated the tiger clan to court Yue’er for one simple reason: to use her to uncover the secret hidden here.”
“Well, now you know the secret. Are you satisfied?”
Cold sweat instantly beaded on Hu Zhan’s forehead, trickling down his pale face.
The Wolf King continued his slow approach. “Those two old fossils from the fox and tiger clans actually thought their little alliance would force me to hand over the secret.”
“Such a laughably naive notion.”
The Wolf King casually waved his right hand, tossing two freshly severed, blood-dripping heads onto the ground right in front of Hu Zhan.
Hu Zhan and Lin Hu stared at the heads, their souls practically fleeing their bodies in sheer terror.
They had never imagined the Wolf King possessed this level of horrifying strength.
“You two are the future of the demon race. If you submit to me right now, I will not only spare your lives, but I will even bestow a Fated Chance upon you.”
Faced with this bloody ultimatum masquerading as an olive branch, Hu Zhan and Lin Hu didn’t hesitate for a second. They dropped to their knees and submitted.
Having smoothly brought the young masters to heel, the Wolf King turned his terrifying gaze back to Chen Changsheng.
“Chen Changsheng. I greatly admire your intellect. Tell me who sent you, submit to my rule, and I will spare your life.”
Chen Changsheng smiled faintly. “I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed, Wolf King. You could guess for a thousand years and never name the person backing me.”
“Furthermore, based on my understanding of this array, extracting that power requires a substantial blood sacrifice.”
“The only reason you haven’t killed me yet is because you don’t want to waste perfectly good fuel, right?”
The Wolf King’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. “You really do know too much.”
“In that case, allow me to grant your wish.”
With a sweeping wave of his hand, the Wolf King instantly teleported Chen Changsheng to another location deep within the forbidden land.
A massive, churning pool of blood appeared before Chen Changsheng. The edges of the pit were completely paved with bleached white bones.
Splash!
The headless corpses of the two Soul Formation stage elders from the fox and tiger clans were casually tossed into the crimson liquid.
The blood pool instantly began to violently boil. Within moments, the essence condensed into a single, pitch-black Pill.
Snatching the Pill from the air, the Wolf King tossed it into his mouth and swallowed it whole. He immediately frowned.
“Without Yue’er’s royal blood as a catalyst, this blood pool isn’t enough to push me into the Soul Formation realm!”
“Turtle Elder, is there truly no other way?”
The Turtle Elder slowly shuffled to the Wolf King’s side. “Reporting to the Wolf King, this old servant does indeed have one final method.”
“What method?”
Squelch!
A withered hand instantly punched straight through the Wolf King’s chest. Simultaneously, a swarm of black, writhing characters crawled down the Turtle Elder’s arm, burrowing rapidly into the Wolf King’s flesh.
“By eating you, I can break through to the Soul Formation realm.”
The Wolf King stared at the Turtle Elder, his eyes wide with absolute disbelief.
