Synopsis

The world burned first. Then came the bugs.
Jax was a convict on death row, dragged across the scorching sands of the Frozen Wastes to be executed. His crime? Trying to survive. His fate? To be eaten alive by the relentless insect swarm.
But seconds before the end, the world shifted.
[System Initialized: God-Tier Architect] [Welcome, User. Let’s build.]
Armed with the ability to construct automated Sentry Towers, impenetrable Bastions, and resource-generating Extraction Wells, Jax turns his execution ground into a fortress.
He claims Sector 33—the infamous “Dead Man’s Maw”—a canyon choke point overrun by Sandworms and Winged Ravagers. To the rest of the survivors in Redrock Bastion, it’s a suicide mission. To Jax, it’s the perfect kill box.
With a gentle giant named Barney as his shield and a cunning scavenger named Silas as his eyes, Jax will do more than just survive the apocalypse.
He’s going to redesign it.
What to expect:
Hardcore Tower Defense: Turrets, walls, traps, and strategic layouts.
Base Building: Progress from a single shelter to a sprawling fortress city.
LitRPG Progression: Stats, tech trees, resource management (Cores/Energy), and system shops.
Wasteland Survival: Scavenging, heat management, and fighting off cutthroat raiders.
Loyal Companions: No solo play. A strong bond between the MC and his team.

Spread the love

Gareth stared at the glowing crystals in his hands, dumbfounded. He looked up at Jax, his expression a mixture of confusion and wariness.

“Uh… what is this? Why are you giving me Cores? You already gave me two Tier 2s earlier.”

Jax cleared his throat. “Just hold onto them. We need to talk.”

Suspicion clouded Gareth’s eyes, but he followed Jax to the base of the fortress. Jax found a spot against the wall and crouched down casually. Gareth mirrored him, squatting in the dust, but his mind was racing.

Panic began to set in. He thought about his performance over the last few days—the cowardice, the shaking hands, the uselessness during the swarm attacks. In this outpost, dead weight was usually cut loose.

Is he firing me? Is this severance pay before he kicks me out into the wasteland?

An ominous chill settled in Gareth’s gut. He looked at Jax, bracing for the worst.

Jax, however, seemed to be struggling with how to broach the subject. He stared at the horizon for a moment before turning back.

“So, Guild Leader. You married?”

Gareth blinked, completely thrown off balance. He shook his head slowly. “Uh, no. I had a girl back in the day, but she dumped me. Said I was too poor. I’ve been solo for years. It’s easier, honestly. One mouth to feed.”

Jax nodded thoughtfully. “Do you want a wife?”

Gareth stopped fiddling with the dirt. He looked at Jax like the younger man had grown a second head. “Want one? Of course I do. But look at me. I’m broke. A wife is a huge expense.”

Jax grinned, a sharp, calculating expression. “Look at it this way. You’re the Guild Leader of The Dire Wolves. A man your age, still single? It’s bad for morale. People will talk. You need to settle down.”

Gareth couldn’t believe his ears. His life choices were now a matter of guild policy?

“I… I don’t think it matters much,” Garethstammered. “Half the men in The Sprawl are single. We’re all scraping by. Marriage isn’t about love anymore; it’s about survival. Women have high standards because they have to. Nobody wants to shackle themselves to a pauper and starve together. In this world, a man who can’t provide is just a burden.”

Gareth’s words were harsh, but they were the cold, hard truth of the wasteland.

Nearby, Annie was scraping the last bits of porridge from the pot. She frowned at Gareth’s bluntness, but she didn’t say anything.

She was only seventeen, technically of marriageable age in this hellscape, but she had no illusions about romance. She wasn’t looking for a prince; she was looking for stability.

In her eyes, her brother was the gold standard. Jax was a close second—maybe even better. He had power, resources, and Defense Towers. Being with him meant never starving again.

But she dismissed the thought as quickly as it came. Jax was mysterious, powerful, and likely an Awakened. She was just a girl who could cook. She wasn’t in his league.

Her requirements were low: a man who could protect her. She could feed herself. She refused to be dead weight.

Jax ignored the bleak philosophy and nodded. “Fine. I’m just asking if you want one. If you do, I can help you make it happen. I have money. I have resources.”

He leaned in, his voice dropping an octave. “As long as you stick with me, finding a wife is the easy part.”

Gareth froze. The gears in his head finally clicked into place. This wasn’t about marriage. This was a recruitment pitch.

Jax wanted him. Permanently.

Gareth had dreamed of this. Jax controlled Sentry Towers, a Howitzer, and had combat skills that bordered on supernatural. Following him meant security. It meant three meals a day.

If he played his cards right, he could afford to add another pair of chopsticks to the table. He was in his thirties, in the prime of his life. Of course he wanted a family.

Gareth looked up, hope replacing the fear in his eyes. “You… you want me to stay? To follow you?”

“That’s right,” Jax said. “I have a job opening.”

Jax pointed down into the pit where Silas was rhythmically swinging his pickaxe. “Silas is good, but the output is too slow. I need to double my production of Energy Shards. I need a second miner. You interested?”

Gareth bobbed his head so hard he almost gave himself whiplash. This was like winning the lottery.

“Yes! Absolutely! It’s just mining, right? I can do that. I’ve got plenty of strength. I’ll dig until my arms fall off!”

“Good,” Jax said. “But before you start, I need to grant you an ability. It’ll make you faster, stronger. More efficient.”

Gareth paused. Over the last two days, he’d heard Silas brag about his unnatural stamina and strength in the mines—how he could work like a bull without tiring. Silas didn’t know where it came from, but Gareth had his suspicions. It was Jax.

“I’m willing,” Gareth said, but then hesitated. “Wait. Will accepting this… will it stop me from becoming an Awakened later?”

Jax rolled his eyes so hard it hurt. “Awakened? Buddy, wake up. The odds of Awakening are one in ten thousand. You really think you’re going to hit that jackpot?”

Jax’s voice turned stern. “Stop dreaming. Instead of fantasizing about becoming a superhero, focus on filling your belly and keeping your head on your shoulders. Survival is the only stat that matters. Don’t you agree?”

The harsh reality check hit Gareth like a bucket of ice water. He slumped slightly, nodding. Jax was right.

Becoming Awakened required luck, but it also required the spine to handle the target on your back. With great power came great danger. Gareth knew himself; he was a coward. If he Awakened, he’d be hunted, conscripted by larger warlords, or fed to the swarm.

Being Jax’s miner was safe. It was steady. And if it came with a wife, it was paradise.

“I’m in,” Gareth said firmly. “I’ll do it.”

“Close your eyes,” Jax ordered.

Gareth obeyed. Jax placed a hand on the man’s greasy head.

[System: Converting Unit…] [Unit ‘Gareth’ converted to: Miner]

A flash of golden light surged from Jax’s palm. Gareth gasped as a strange, warm energy flooded his limbs. He felt his muscles knit tighter, his fatigue evaporating. He tried to push the power out, to test it, but it remained internal, a wellspring of endurance.

Jax removed his hand and shoved a sturdy iron hoe into Gareth’s chest.

“Here. This is your weapon now. Rest up tonight. Tomorrow morning, you drop into the pit with Silas. You’re done with the corpse duty. I’ll handle the bodies from now on.”

Gareth gripped the handle of the hoe, feeling a mix of profound gratitude and a twinge of melancholy.

He was safe. He was employed. But the title of “Guild Leader” felt hollow now. He was officially a tool in someone else’s machine.

Annie, who had been watching the entire exchange, stepped forward, her eyes shining with sudden anticipation.

“Brother Jax!” she chirped. “Can I be a miner too?”

Jax looked at the slender girl and sighed. “You? A miner? Don’t be ridiculous. You stick to the cooking. The mine isn’t a playground.”

“Oh,” Annie mumbled, deflated.

That night, the wasteland came alive again.

A mixed wave of Sandworms and Rodent-Maw Creepers surged against the walls. Jax didn’t panic. He vaulted into the fray, deploying his [Holo-Decoy] to cluster the enemies.

With the monsters distracted, the Howitzer and Sentry Towers rained hellfire upon them. Jax moved like a ghost through the chaos, harvesting kills.

By the time the last screech faded, he had secured the daily objective.

[Loot Acquired: Refined Iron x20]

Jax wiped ichor from his blade and checked his inventory.

“Just thirty Stardust Stones left,” he muttered. “Thirty more, and the fortress hits Tier 2.”

He turned his attention to the [Market]. It was time to check The Vault.

The daily refresh was a gamble—like opening a mystery box in a pay-to-win game—but ignoring it was a waste.

He entered the virtual space of The Vault. A single red “Lucky Bag” floated in the center of the room, illuminated by the ghostly oil lamp.

Jax reached out and tapped it.

[Item Reveal]

Offer: Energy Shards x10 Price: 100 Cores

Jax scoffed. Ten shards for a hundred cores? That was highway robbery. The exchange rate was garbage.

He shook his head and closed the interface.

“Trash. Another day wasted.”
