Synopsis

The world burned first. Then came the bugs.
Jax was a convict on death row, dragged across the scorching sands of the Frozen Wastes to be executed. His crime? Trying to survive. His fate? To be eaten alive by the relentless insect swarm.
But seconds before the end, the world shifted.
[System Initialized: God-Tier Architect] [Welcome, User. Let’s build.]
Armed with the ability to construct automated Sentry Towers, impenetrable Bastions, and resource-generating Extraction Wells, Jax turns his execution ground into a fortress.
He claims Sector 33—the infamous “Dead Man’s Maw”—a canyon choke point overrun by Sandworms and Winged Ravagers. To the rest of the survivors in Redrock Bastion, it’s a suicide mission. To Jax, it’s the perfect kill box.
With a gentle giant named Barney as his shield and a cunning scavenger named Silas as his eyes, Jax will do more than just survive the apocalypse.
He’s going to redesign it.
What to expect:
Hardcore Tower Defense: Turrets, walls, traps, and strategic layouts.
Base Building: Progress from a single shelter to a sprawling fortress city.
LitRPG Progression: Stats, tech trees, resource management (Cores/Energy), and system shops.
Wasteland Survival: Scavenging, heat management, and fighting off cutthroat raiders.
Loyal Companions: No solo play. A strong bond between the MC and his team.

Chapter 131: Industrial Expansion

Jax and Elena spent the entire day grinding in the wasteland before returning to the mining outpost just as dinner was being served.

Hazel, efficient as ever, was waiting for them. She handed over the stockpiled resources from the last two days—a heavy sack clinking with Stardust Stone and Refined Iron.

“Good work,” Jax said, weighing the bag in his hand. “Let’s see if the mines are ready for an overhaul.”

He walked over to the Refined Iron deposits.

There were currently two sources. One was a natural vein Jax had discovered himself. It was inconsistent; on good days, it yielded nearly a hundred units, but on bad days, it barely produced ten.

The other was the System-generated mine. It was a picture of stability, producing exactly one hundred units every single day.

Jax placed his hand on the System mine’s frame.

[Tier 1 Refined Iron Mine] [Reserves: 28/500]

“Twenty-eight left?” Jax frowned. “System, does this thing have a hard cap?”

[System: Affirmative. Tier 1 mines have a maximum reserve of 500 units. Once depleted, the node must evolve or be replaced.]

“Wait,” Jax paused. “Evolve?”

He quickly checked the construction requirements for the Technique Factory.

[Tier 1 Technique Factory]

Cost: 500 Stardust Stone, 500 Refined Iron.

Function: Produces utility techniques and buffs (e.g., Mining Speed Boost).

Jax stared at the numbers. “I see what you did there. The cost to build the factory is exactly the total output of a Tier 1 mine. You force me to deplete an entire node just to unlock the tech to mine faster. That’s a hell of a gameplay loop.”

[System: Resource management is the cornerstone of architecture.]

“Cheeky,” Jax muttered.

Before he could investigate further, a commotion erupted near the Stardust Stone pit.

“Boss! Boss, come quick!”

Jax turned to see Kaleb waving frantically. The miners were backing away from the pit, shielding their eyes.

“What’s wrong?” Jax sprinted over, pushing through the crowd.

“It just started glowing!” Kaleb shouted over the hum of energy. “We can’t get inside. The entrance is blocked by light!”

Jax squinted at the blinding white radiance pulsing from the mine shaft. It felt familiar—the same energy signature as the Bastion upgrades.

“Holy crap,” Jax realized, a grin spreading across his face. “It’s not breaking. It’s leveling up.”

He pulled up the status window.

[Tier 1 Stardust Stone Mine depleted.] [Initiating Automatic Upgrade to Tier 2…]

“Stand down, everyone!” Jax announced, his voice cutting through the panic. “It’s safe! The mine is upgrading itself. Take five and grab some water.”

Kaleb slumped with relief. “Upgrading? I thought it was going to explode.”

“Not on my watch,” Jax assured him.

Ten minutes later, the light faded.

The rickety wooden supports of the Tier 1 mine were gone. In their place stood a reinforced structure of steel and stone. The shaft was wider, the descent smoother, and the equipment modernized.

[Tier 2 Stardust Stone Mine] [Reserves: 1000/1000]

Jax checked the efficiency ratios.

Level 1 Miner: 100 units/day.

Level 2 Miner: 200 units/day.

Level 3 Miner: 500 units/day.

“The bottleneck isn’t the mine; it’s the manpower,” Jax mused.

Kaleb was currently the only Level 2 Miner. Having him work a Tier 1 vein was a waste of his potential.

Jax turned to his foreman. “Kaleb, I’m reorganizing the workflow. You’re taking point on this new Tier 2 mine. Your output is double everyone else’s, so I need you on the biggest vein.”

He then opened the build menu. He had Cores to burn and a need for speed.

[System: Constructing Tier 1 Stardust Stone Mine x2] [System: Constructing Tier 1 Refined Iron Mine x2] [System: Constructing Tier 1 Energy Shards Extraction Well x1]

Five pillars of light erupted around the valley as the new infrastructure materialized. The cost was steep—4,000 Tier 1 Cores—but the investment would pay for itself in days.

Jax gathered the crew. He selected several promising workers from the contract pool and granted them the Miner class, bringing his total workforce to nine official miners.

“Kaleb,” Jax said, pulling the young man aside. “You’re in charge of production. Hazel handles logistics and external sales. If Chen Tian sends his courier for the Energy Shards, you hand them to Hazel, and she deals with him. Clear?”

Kaleb scratched his head. “Boss, maybe Hazel should just run it all? I’m just a guy with a pickaxe.”

“No,” Jax said firmly. “She’s the diplomat; you’re the operations manager. Division of labor is how we scale. I need you to lead these men.”

Kaleb straightened up, nodding. “Understood, Boss.”

“Good. Now, listen up everyone!” Jax addressed the group. “We’re pulling an all-nighter. I need 500 Stardust and 400 Refined Iron before sunrise.”

A few groans rippled through the tired workers.

“However,” Jax raised his voice, “overtime is paid at double the rate. And anyone who hits their quota gets a bonus meal of meat stew.”

The groans instantly turned into cheers. The miners grabbed their tools and rushed the pits with renewed vigor.

Jax smiled. He remembered his days working dead-end jobs. Passion was cheap; fair pay was the only fuel that mattered.

The night passed in a blur of activity. The clinking of pickaxes and the hum of the extraction wells filled the valley.

By dawn, the stockpiles were full.

“Finally,” Jax exhaled, staring at the mountain of resources. “Enough for the Technique Factory.”

He loaded the truck, the suspension groaning under the weight. After a final briefing with Hazel and Kaleb, he signaled Elena.

“Let’s go home.”

They drove back to Sector 33 as the sun crested the horizon. The Bastion stood tall against the morning light, a beacon of safety.

The insect attacks had been sporadic throughout the night, but the Cryo-Tower and Tar Pit Trap combo had held the line effortlessly.

As they pulled up to the ramp, Barnaby stood by the gate, waving enthusiastically.

“Brother! Sister! You’re back!”
