Chapter 141: Cooperation
Sawyer looked at the car and felt it was very familiar. Upon closer inspection, he saw that it was indeed Director Quinn, the leading figure of several families, sitting inside.
Hearing someone call him from outside, Quinn turned his head and saw Sawyer. The wrinkles on his aged face immediately smoothed out.
“Ah, we’ve been calling for you for a long time. You’ve finally come.”
With the help of his butler, Quinn got out of the car. He was about to exchange a few pleasantries when he noticed someone standing behind Sawyer—the long-awaited Jax.
“Oh my, oh my, I didn’t expect Young Brother Jax to be here too. You have no idea how hard we’ve been looking for you. You’ve finally appeared.”
A faint, calm smile appeared on Jax’s face. He knew the other party must have figured things out; otherwise, they wouldn’t have searched for him so diligently.
“Oh, it seems you’ve come to a realization. So, have you made up your mind?”
Quinn glanced around and pointed to his car. “This isn’t the place to talk. How about we discuss it in my car?”
Sawyer, standing to the side, felt somewhat awkward. At this moment, he was being treated as if he were invisible. Quinn had only greeted him briefly before ignoring him.
However, he didn’t dwell on it too much. This time, even if he were treated as invisible or a follower from start to finish, it didn’t matter.
As long as he could persuade these opportunists to cooperate in resisting the Insect Swarm, everything would be fine.
Moreover, back in the lab, he had already concluded that Jax’s method was indeed feasible and basically had no issues in defending against these Insect Swarms.
Except for the lack of a Spiked Dune Lord specimen, they had already tested all other insect monsters from Tier 1 to Tier 3.
He was now full of confidence in repelling this Insect Swarm, so he followed behind Jax with a confident expression.
The butler opened the car door and stood respectfully to the side, gesturing for Jax to enter. Jax didn’t hesitate and bent down to get into the car. Quinn followed him in, and the door was closed immediately.
Sawyer, who had intended to follow them into the car, was left standing outside, feeling awkward. He couldn’t understand why he seemed to be ignored by everyone. The previous situation was similar—these families had jointly sealed the underground tunnels without even informing him, which was a great insult to their experts.
However, after thinking about it, Sawyer quickly realized why they dared to treat him this way. It was because the Helios Syndicate had taken no action so far, and even their Defense Towers were locked away in the Defense Tower Research Center.
Feeling disappointed in his family, Sawyer stood outside the car, unconsciously taking out a cigarette from his pocket, lighting it, and staring intently at the chaos in the distance.
Although part of the wall had been occupied by the Insect Swarm, the swarm hadn’t organized an effective attack.
After all, there were still many Defense Towers on the wall. Even if the insects broke into the city, they would mostly be shot down by the internal Defense Towers.
However, some stronger insect monsters had secretly infiltrated the crowd, slaughtering humans, and many had died there.
Behind the entire wall, a vacuum zone had formed. Civilians who couldn’t enter the core area had no choice but to pick up their weapons and resist these insect monsters to protect their homes.
Jax sat in the car, quietly watching Quinn, whose face showed a hint of embarrassment.
Given his current status, dealing with this young man in his early twenties seemed somewhat beneath him.
But the crisis was imminent, and he couldn’t afford to care about such things. As for face, as long as they could withstand this Insect Swarm, it didn’t matter if he had to swallow his pride and ask for help.
After organizing his thoughts, Quinn slowly spoke. “Young Brother Jax, do you remember our previous agreement?”
Jax nodded lightly. “Of course I remember. I said before that as long as you cooperate with me, bring out all your Defense Towers to resist this Spiked Dune Lord, leave the killing of the Spiked Dune Lord to me, and hand over the Cores to me, I can help you fend off this Insect Swarm.”
“Yes, that was our agreement. But since this is a cooperation, I need to see if you have the capability. These Defense Towers are too important to us.”
Even now, Quinn still didn’t fully trust Jax. Jax understood what he was worried about—they were afraid their Defense Towers would be destroyed under his command, which would have a huge impact on them.
However, Jax wasn’t concerned about these things. What he cared about was whether the other party was willing to cooperate with him.
As long as they were willing to cooperate, he could complete his mission and help them fend off this Insect Swarm, taking a share of the benefits.
Jax took out a few crumpled papers from his pocket and handed them to Quinn. Quinn was slightly surprised, smoothed out the papers, and looked at them.
“What is this?”
“This is some data we collected in the lab. Using my method to build walls can effectively defend against these Insect Swarms. However, the materials are very special and need to be mixed by me. So, you just need to cooperate with me. Also, since you’ve agreed to cooperate with me, everyone must follow my orders. If anyone is unwilling to cooperate, don’t blame me for turning hostile.”
Quinn lowered his head to look at the content on the papers, his expression growing increasingly serious. After reading, he silently looked up at Jax.
“Have you already tested everything on here?”
“Yes, it’s all been tested. The data is absolutely reliable, you can rest assured. Also, we don’t have much time left. If we’re going to cooperate, you need to quickly bring out all the Defense Towers you have and gather all the civilians to assist with this work.”
After hearing Jax’s words, Quinn finally gritted his teeth and nodded. “Fine, since you dare to guarantee it, I’ll bear the risk this time. But let me be clear: if you can’t handle this, don’t blame me for turning hostile.”
Jax still looked at him with full confidence.
“Of course, this matter requires the cooperation of all of us.”
Quinn finally nodded and extended his hand to Jax.
“Then let’s wish for a pleasant cooperation and drive back these Insect Swarms as soon as possible.”
After discussing some details, they got out of the car. Quinn, who had originally looked helpless, now had that expression gone. He immediately said to his butler,
“Go back to the stronghold now and notify all families to report the specific numbers and capabilities of all their Defense Towers. Also, bring out all our Defense Tower mobile vehicles. We need to make unified arrangements now.”
After hearing this, the butler showed a surprised expression and couldn’t help but glance at Jax. But in the end, he nodded, got into another car, and drove toward the stronghold.
Quinn stood in place, looking at the chaos in the distance, feeling helpless.
“These rioters have destroyed so many of our families. To think we have to cooperate with them now—it’s an insult to our families. But there’s no choice. Since we’ve agreed to cooperate, we have to do it this way.”
Quinn got back into the car and drove toward his family’s direction.
Sawyer, standing to the side, looked anxious and asked Jax, “So? Did the old man agree to cooperate with you?”
“Yes, he’s agreed to cooperate with us. We need to arrange the plan now, but we don’t have much time left. We need to quickly grasp the numbers and types of these Insect Swarms and whether any Spiked Dune Lords have entered the city.”
After Jax assigned some tasks to him, Sawyer immediately looked excited. He said to Jax solemnly,
“Brother, no need to say more. This favor is something we all owe you. We’ll definitely repay you in the future.”
Jax just smiled lightly without saying much, then followed him back to the villa.
