Chapter 167: Upgrading to a Tier 4 Bastion
The heavily armored transport tore across the wasteland, finally grinding to a halt within the familiar boundaries of Sector 33.
The preparatory work was already finished. Gareth and his crew had been thorough; the scorched earth was entirely cleared of insect carcasses, and the Bastion’s interior had been scrubbed clean of the grime of battle.
“Boss, everything is locked down and ready!” Gareth called out, jogging up to the transport as Jax stepped out. “We’re just waiting on you to initiate the upgrades.”
“Good work,” Jax nodded, clapping Gareth on the shoulder. “Once we wrap up these upgrades today, you’re all heading back to The Sprawl with me. I’ve already arranged permanent housing for your crew within the inner city. When we arrive, you can move straight in.”
A wave of pure, unfiltered excitement washed over the gathered crew. They had been praying for this day. The nightmare of sleeping in the open wasteland, constantly looking over their shoulders for the next Insect Swarm, was finally over.
Leaving the cheering crew behind, Jax walked over to the nearest Cryo-Tower. He ran a hand over its freezing metallic surface, a wide grin spreading across his face.
“I’ve been waiting so long for this,” Jax muttered, practically vibrating with excitement. “System! Upgrade!”
[System Alert: Tier 1 Cryo-Tower upgrade initiated. Please wait.]
[System Alert: Tier 1 Cryo-Tower upgrade initiated. Please wait.]
Hearing the mechanical chimes, Jax let out a satisfied breath. “Finally. Once they hit Tier 2, I’ll push them straight to Tier 3. I can’t wait to see what kind of crowd-control a Tier 3 Cryo-Tower puts out.”
He had high expectations. The Cryo-Towers were his only specialized elemental Defense Towers. Paired with the Tar Pit Traps coating the perimeter, they created an absolute kill zone. Thus far, this combination had easily pinned down anything up to Tier 3. However, Jax had a nagging suspicion that if a Tier 4 or higher insect breached the perimeter, his current setup wouldn’t be enough to anchor them.
A few hours later, the familiar chime rang out.
[System Alert: Tier 2 Cryo-Tower upgrade complete!]
[System Alert: Tier 2 Cryo-Tower upgrade complete!]
“Perfect. Keep them rolling!” Jax commanded with a sweep of his hand. Instantly, the two Cryo-Towers were swallowed by a brilliant, cascading golden light.
Not stopping there, Jax moved to the perimeter and dumped resources into the unfinished Wall sections, pushing the entire defensive perimeter to Tier 3 in one massive wave of upgrades.
Curious, he pulled up the new stats for the towers.
[Tier 3 Cryo-Tower]
[Attack Power: 150]
[Max Targets: 30]
[Attack Speed: 5.0]
[Range: 100 meters]
[Effect: Deals continuous Frost damage. Reduces enemy movement and attack speed by 100%!]
Jax blinked, staring hard at the blue holographic text. “Hold on. A one-hundred-percent speed reduction? System, is that a glitch? If it reduces their speed by a hundred percent, doesn’t that just freeze them solid in place?”
[System Reply: Negative, User. There are many variables you have yet to encounter. Upon reaching Tier 4 and above, monsters naturally develop advanced abilities. Many possess innate speed multipliers or specialized buffs that drastically increase their baseline velocity.]
[System Reply: Furthermore, higher-tier entities possess innate resistances to crowd-control and slowing effects. A 100% base reduction is necessary to visibly affect them.]
“Ah, that makes sense,” Jax murmured, rubbing his chin. “So it all depends on the enemy’s tier and base stats. If a Tier 5 boss charges the gate, a 100% slow might only shave off a fraction of its actual momentum. Good to know.”
Jax spent the rest of the day meticulously managing the construction queues. He waited as the sun dipped below the horizon, bathing the wasteland in twilight. Finally, the last Sentry Tower chimed its completion.
Every single Defense Tower and Wall segment was maxed out.
“Time for the main event,” Jax whispered. He opened the central God-Tier Architect System interface and navigated to the tech tree.
Sure enough, the previously grayed-out Tier 4 Bastion branch was now glowing with a vibrant, pulsing light.
“Let’s see what new toys I get to play with.”
Jax scrolled through the newly unlocked schematics, his eyes landing on two advanced Defense Towers.
[Spell Tower: Projects devastating magical artillery. Requires manual charging to unleash high-yield area-of-effect damage. (Prerequisite: Spell Potion)]
[High-Energy Tesla Tower: Generates ultra-high voltage electrical arcs, chaining damage to all hostiles within range. Attack power scales infinitely with supplied voltage. (Prerequisite: Power Plant)]
Jax stared at the requirements, his jaw dropping slightly. “Are you kidding me? The upkeep on these is ridiculous!”
He tapped on the Spell Tower’s prerequisite for more details.
[Spell Potion: Requires Tier 2 Spell Factory for production. One potion powers a Spell Tower for 24 hours. Manufacturing cost: Tier 3 Cores.]
“Incredible,” Jax sighed, shaking his head. “So I have to upgrade the Spell Factory first, then burn high-tier Cores just to keep the towers online. I hope the damage output is worth the logistical nightmare.”
He checked the High-Energy Tesla Tower next. The concept was fascinating—its damage had no upper limit, scaling entirely off the amount of raw electricity pumped into it from external power plants.
Aside from the two new elemental towers, the Tier 4 upgrade unlocked six additional Sentry Towers, two Howitzer Turrets, and a brand-new structure: the Builder Barracks.
Jax instantly thought of his old RTS games. Does this mean I can finally spawn my own combat units? Unfortunately, until he actually constructed the building, the stats remained hidden.
Pushing the new tech aside, Jax focused on the core objective. He selected the central Bastion.
Upgrading to Tier 4 required a flat cost of 1,000 Stardust Stones and 1,000 ingots of Refined Iron. Thanks to Hazel’s recent expedition, his inventory was flush with exactly what he needed.
“Up we go,” Jax said, hitting the confirm button.
A blinding pillar of golden light erupted from the center of the base, illuminating the dark wasteland for kilometers. Gareth and the crew stood off to the side, shielding their eyes and watching in silent awe as the central structure expanded, its armor plating shifting and locking into a vastly more imposing configuration.
Jax, however, ignored the light show. His eyes were glued to the System log.
[System Alert: Bastion successfully upgraded to Tier 4.]
[Reward: Bastion Relocation Talisman x1]
Jax’s heart pounded against his ribs. There it is. This single item was the key to his entire master plan. With it, he could instantly pack up this remote outpost and drop it squarely inside The Sprawl. No more split forces. No more agonizing over leaving the base undefended while he managed city politics. He could consolidate his power, let Elena and the others safely farm experience outside the city walls, and rapidly accelerate his leveling speed.
He opened his inventory and selected the glowing, rune-carved talisman.
[Bastion Relocation Talisman: Allows the User to instantly transport the Bastion, all connected buildings, and all Defense Towers to a new location.]
[Warning: The destination must be territory legally owned by the User. The Bastion must be bound to the target city.]
[Detecting valid territory: The Sprawl. Initiate binding protocol?]
Jax chuckled. The System was remarkably thorough. “Good thing I actually sat through that sham of an election. Bind it.”
[Binding to The Sprawl successful. The User may now reclaim all structures.]
Jax took a deep breath, looking around at the sprawling, heavily fortified military base he had built from scratch.
“Reclaim.”
There was no sound, no explosion, no flash of light.
One second, the massive Tier 4 Bastion, the towering Walls, and the hum of the Cryo-Towers dominated the landscape. The next second, there was nothing but an empty, wind-swept crater.
Gareth and the crew stumbled forward, weapons raised, completely bewildered by the sudden void. They looked from the empty dirt to Jax, utterly speechless.
