Chapter 152: The Insect Swarm Changes Course
The siege dragged on relentlessly. By 9:00 PM, the second wave of the Insect Swarm crashed against the perimeter, just two kilometers outside The Sprawl. Finally, the core zone’s defenses buckled under the sheer mass of the swarm.
“Run! Move it! If we don’t run now, we’re dead!”
Slade’s eyes were wide with unadulterated terror. In a cowardly stroke of self-preservation, he had ordered his men to blow a small, deliberate breach in a secluded section of the Wall. Using the surging Insect Swarm as a distraction, he and a few dozen Tier 2 Awakened elites from The Helios Syndicate scrambled through the gap, fighting a desperate retreat as they abandoned the core zone to its fate.
They fled like beaten dogs toward the underground passages, diving into the subterranean darkness without a single backward glance, narrowly escaping the ravenous tide.
Up on the outer Wall, the surviving defenders pointed and laughed at the fleeing “elites,” jeering at their disgraceful exit.
Down in his command center, Sawyer received word of Slade’s successful, albeit humiliating, escape. A flash of hot anger crossed his face, but it quickly cooled into a heavy, resigned sigh. Blood is blood, he rationalized. No matter how furious he was over their father’s usurpation, he couldn’t bring himself to wish death upon his own brother.
Torn by conflicting loyalties, Sawyer pushed the thought aside. He didn’t know how to face the remnants of The Helios Syndicate now. Fortunately, the comms crackled to life with Jax’s voice, giving him a much-needed distraction.
“Open all eastern Defense Towers. Clear the path.”
The operators immediately executed the order. A safe corridor opened up, and the trapped members of the major families poured out of the core zone, fleeing for their lives. Panting and covered in dust, they couldn’t help but feel a grudging surge of relief that Sawyer had been smart enough not to fight a war of attrition. More than that, they were forced to admit a terrifying truth: Jax’s tactical control was absolute.
Stepping out of the shattered core layer, the elites were greeted by the surreal sight of the Insect Swarm completely ignoring them, instead surging blindly through The Sprawl toward the eastern outskirts.
Guided by the slum defenders, the rescued elites were ushered into the makeshift safety of the shantytown.
For the first time in The Sprawl’s history, the pristine, arrogant aristocrats sat side-by-side with the very scavengers and workers they had oppressed for years. The atmosphere, against all odds, was surprisingly harmonious. This unprecedented truce was entirely Jax’s doing; if the haughty lords back in Redrock Bastion could see this, they would have stroked out from the shock alone.
Representing the surviving patriarchs, Director Quinn stepped forward, bowing deeply to Jax.
“Brother Jax, thank you. If not for your intervention, The Sprawl would be nothing more than a graveyard right now. We owe you our lives.”
Jax waved a hand dismissively. “Save your thanks for me. If you want to show gratitude, show it to the people of the slums who didn’t let you get eaten. Treat them better. You’re going to be working with them a lot from now on.”
Director Quinn nodded fervently, turning to a stunned Liu Hu. “Brother Liu Hu, thank you. I look forward to a new era of cooperation between us.”
Liu Hu blinked. He had never been this close to the untouchable elites, let alone heard one speak to him with actual respect. He scratched his head awkwardly. “Uh, just… stop bleeding us dry, alright? As long as you stop exploiting us, we’ll get along fine.”
“You have my word,” Director Quinn promised, his tone grim. “This siege was a wake-up call. Relying on Redrock Bastion was a fool’s errand. They used us as cannon fodder. We are done being their pawns. Rather than dancing to their tune, we will stand with the brothers we live with to defend our own home.”
Liu Hu and the slum fighters nodded in fierce agreement. The elites murmured their assent. The common enemy had forged an unlikely, but desperate, unity.
Sawyer strode into the room, taking in the bizarre sight of the unified factions. “Brother Jax,” he reported, “the Insect Swarm is funneling straight into the eastern sector. What’s the next move?”
Jax’s lips curled into a confident smirk. “The fish took the bait. Now, we reel them in and drag them to their new home. Are the vehicles ready?”
“Fueled and waiting on your command,” Sawyer confirmed.
“Good. Have the drivers prep their engines. We’re taking this swarm for a ride.”
Suddenly, a crisp chime echoed in Jax’s mind.
[System Alert: Tier 4 Spiked Dune Lord Killed x1]
[Quest Complete. Rewards Distributed:]
[- Extraction Well x3]
[- Refined Iron Mine x3]
[- Stardust Stone Mine x3]
Jax let out a long exhale, the tension bleeding from his shoulders. Finally. The quest is locked in. Now I can officially hand this headache over to Redrock Bastion.
He stood up, his eyes locking onto Sawyer. “Stand by. Wait for my mark.”
Director Quinn, watching the exchange, stepped forward anxiously. “Jax, what’s the plan? Do you need our vehicles? We have a fleet of high-end, off-road transports—”
“Your luxury rides are useless here, Director Quinn,” Jax interrupted with a chuckle. “The swarm doesn’t care about leather seats. If you want to donate them for my personal use later, I won’t say no. But right now, I need junkers. I need loud, obnoxious engines, terrible mufflers, and heavy exhaust. The swarm isn’t fast; we just need to make enough noise to lead them straight to Redrock Bastion’s doorstep.”
Realization dawned on Director Quinn’s face. “I see! Brilliant. Is there anything else we can do?”
“Actually, yes. And it needs to happen tonight.” Jax pulled a stack of blueprints from his inventory and shoved them into Quinn’s hands. “Take these. Draft every able-bodied person from your families and start building Walls. I don’t care if they’re ugly, and I don’t care if they’re rough. They just need to be tall, and they need to be finished before sunrise. Otherwise, this whole region is screwed.”
He turned to Liu Hu. “Take Director Quinn and his people to your factories. Put them to work. Do not let the sun come up without those Walls standing.”
“You got it!” Liu Hu grinned, relishing the chance to boss the elites around. “Director Quinn, gentlemen, right this way.”
Once the room cleared, Jax rubbed his temples. Leading a city was exhausting. I hope the base is holding up…
Sensing his shift in mood, Elena frowned. “Are you sure the swarm won’t veer off into Sector 33?”
“Positive,” Jax said, though his tone held a sliver of doubt. “I built barricade Walls at the main forks. The swarm takes the path of least resistance; they’ll bypass it. But if they’re bottlenecked for too long… well, who knows if those Walls will hold. Still, the System hasn’t screamed at me yet, so we’re good for now.”
Outside, the night was pitch black. At the eastern edge of The Sprawl, over a hundred rusted, beat-up trucks and heavily modified muscle cars sat idling in the dark. Less than two hundred meters away, the eastern Wall groaned under the immense, chitinous weight of the trapped Insect Swarm. It was on the verge of collapsing.
The drivers gripped their steering wheels, sweating, waiting for the signal.
Sawyer burst through the doors with the final telemetry.
Jax slammed his fist on the table, comms wide open. “Time’s up! All drivers, gun it! Destination: Redrock Bastion!”
Simultaneously, a hundred heavy engines roared to life. The deafening, guttural rumble of stripped exhausts and revving motors shattered the night, completely drowning out the distant hum of the Defense Towers.
The monstrous, chaotic noise hit the Insect Swarm like a physical blow. The creatures that were moments away from breaching the inner city paused, their antennae twitching wildly. Captivated by the mechanical roar, they swiveled their massive bodies toward the source.
Tires squealed, kicking up a massive cloud of desert dust, as the convoy of junkers peeled out into the wasteland. Behind them, drawn by the noise and vibration, the endless sea of monsters gave chase.
Jax watched the dust trail rise into the night sky, a predatory smile on his face. Enjoy the delivery, Redrock.
In the darkness, a thick plume of dust rose over the desert wasteland, while the people of Redrock Bastion remained oblivious to what was happening.
