Synopsis

The world burned first. Then came the bugs.
Jax was a convict on death row, dragged across the scorching sands of the Frozen Wastes to be executed. His crime? Trying to survive. His fate? To be eaten alive by the relentless insect swarm.
But seconds before the end, the world shifted.
[System Initialized: God-Tier Architect] [Welcome, User. Let’s build.]
Armed with the ability to construct automated Sentry Towers, impenetrable Bastions, and resource-generating Extraction Wells, Jax turns his execution ground into a fortress.
He claims Sector 33—the infamous “Dead Man’s Maw”—a canyon choke point overrun by Sandworms and Winged Ravagers. To the rest of the survivors in Redrock Bastion, it’s a suicide mission. To Jax, it’s the perfect kill box.
With a gentle giant named Barney as his shield and a cunning scavenger named Silas as his eyes, Jax will do more than just survive the apocalypse.
He’s going to redesign it.
What to expect:
Hardcore Tower Defense: Turrets, walls, traps, and strategic layouts.
Base Building: Progress from a single shelter to a sprawling fortress city.
LitRPG Progression: Stats, tech trees, resource management (Cores/Energy), and system shops.

Chapter 128: The Perfect Synergy of Frost and Tar

Minutes later, the construction light faded, revealing a structure of crystalline beauty standing stark against the desert heat.

The [Cryo-Tower] loomed over the ramparts, a spire of deep blue frost-metal. Icicles hung from its chassis, defying the scorching temperatures of the wasteland. Just standing near it, Jax felt a refreshing chill radiate outward, a stark contrast to the oppressive heat of the Redrock wastes.

He placed a hand on the cold plating to inspect the stats.

[Tier 1 Cryo-Tower]

Attack Power: 30

Range: 50m

Attack Speed: 5.0

Effect: Deals Frost damage and applies a 50% movement/attack speed slow.

Cost: Consumes 3 Energy Shards per activation.

“Three shards per shot,” Jax noted, calculating the logistics. “Not cheap, but if the crowd control works, it saves ammo for the kinetic turrets.”

He looked out at the silent valley. The swarm hadn’t hit yet.

“I’ll keep it offline until I see the whites of their eyes,” Jax decided. “No point wasting energy cooling the desert air.”

He stood on the wall, waiting. The silence didn’t last long.

[WARNING: High-Energy Signatures Detected.] [Tier 3 Acid-Web Arachnids approaching Sector 33.]

Jax grinned. “Finally. Let’s see if the ice breaks the spider.”

He pulled a handful of glowing blue Energy Shards from his inventory and loaded them into the tower’s hopper. The mechanism hummed to life, the frost aura intensifying. The heavy nozzle atop the spire rotated with a mechanical whir, scanning a 360-degree arc.

[Mission: Repel the Tier 3 Acid-Web Arachnid Wave.] [Reward: Stardust Stone x200, Refined Iron x200.]

“Generous,” Jax whistled. “The System is actually paying out today.”

He turned to the workers below. “Clear the deck! Tier 3s incoming! Gareth, Silas, get back to the safety of the platform!”

The miners scrambled up the ladders without hesitation. As they retreated, two figures descended the ropes from the upper command deck: Raven and Elena.

Jax frowned. “What are you two doing down here?”

Raven stretched her neck, looking bored but ready. She pointed a thumb at the distant dust cloud. “I’m recovered. I can help hold the line.”

Elena stepped in front of her, bristling. “Go back to sleep. We don’t need you. I’m hunting these things myself.”

Raven raised an eyebrow. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me,” Elena snapped, hefting her [Soul Collector Rifle]. “I’m an Awakener now. I don’t need you saving me.”

Jax sighed, rubbing his temples. Raven was offering legitimate tactical support, but Elena treated her like a rival species.

“Elena, stow the attitude,” Jax warned. “Raven is offering to help. We’re fighting giant acid-spitting spiders, not running a popularity contest.”

“I don’t care,” Elena shot back, glaring at the Psionic. “I just don’t like her face.”

Raven rolled her eyes, her expression cooling to absolute indifference. “Fine. If the toddlers want to play alone, I’m going back to bed. Try not to die.”

She turned on her heel and casually walked away.

Jax watched her go, then turned a flat stare on Elena. “What is your problem? She hasn’t done anything to you.”

“She almost snatched you away!” Elena blurted out, her face flushing. “She’s dangerous.”

“She’s a teammate,” Jax countered, baffled. “Are you policing my social life now? Since when do you get a vote on who I work with?”

“I’m not policing your work,” Elena stammered, trying to recover. “I’m policing your… personal entanglements. Look, someone like Hazel is fine. She’s nice. She’s safe. But Raven? She’s trouble. As your sister-in-arms, I’m vetoing her.”

“Unbelievable,” Jax muttered. “We are literally under siege, and you’re playing matchmaker.”

“Just watch me fight!” Elena deflected, turning toward the perimeter.

The conversation was cut short by the chittering of mandibles. The [Acid-Web Arachnids] had arrived.

“Focus,” Jax commanded, his voice dropping into combat mode. “Here they come.”

Elena nodded, raising her rifle. “I want to see what this tower can do.”

The first wave of spiders skittered into the choke point. As soon as they crossed the invisible perimeter of the [Cryo-Tower], the turret unleashed a stream of supercooled white mist.

The effect was instantaneous.

The lead spiders, which had been sprinting with terrifying speed, suddenly jerked as if hitting a wall of molasses. Frost rapidly accumulated on their joints and chitin. Their movements slowed to an agonizing crawl, their legs heavy and stiff.

“Fifty percent slow,” Jax laughed. “It works! They look like they’re moving underwater.”

Elena didn’t waste the opening. She sighted in on the sluggish targets.

Thrum-CRACK!

Her rifle sang, the energy beam punching through a frozen spider’s carapace. Without its speed to evade, the monster was a sitting duck. It collapsed before it could even reach the wall.

“Next wave!” Jax called out.

More spiders surged forward, climbing over the corpses of the fallen. The Cryo-Tower could only suppress five targets at a time, but in the narrow canyon entrance, that was enough to cause a pile-up.

The slowed spiders blocked the path of the ones behind them. The swarm became a traffic jam.

Those that managed to push through the frost zone ran straight into the next layer of defense: the [Tar Pit Trap].

Already slowed by the cold, the spiders stepped into the viscous black sludge and simply… stopped.

The combination was brutal. The frost stiffened their limbs, and the tar glued them to the ground. They were effectively paralyzed.

“Fire at will!” Jax ordered.

The [Sentry Towers] and [Howitzer Turrets] opened up. Explosions rocked the valley floor as shells rained down on the immobilized cluster of monsters. It wasn’t a battle; it was an execution.

The notifications scrolled through Jax’s vision like a waterfall.

When the last spider shrieked and curled into a ball, the silence returned to the valley.

[Mission Complete.] [Reward: Refined Iron x200, Stardust Stone x200.] [System Notification: User EXP Maximum Reached. Promotion to Intermediate Architect Available.]

Jax clenched his fist in victory. “Finally. The experience bar is capped.”

Down below, Elena put a final round into a twitching spider leg. She stood up, looking at her hands. A ripple of golden energy washed over her.

“Jax!” she shouted, waving. “Check my status! I feel different. Stronger.”

Jax scanned her.

[Hero: Elena] [Level: 2] [Stats Increased]

“You leveled up,” Jax confirmed.

“Yes!” Elena cheered, pumping her fist. “I knew it felt different. That was so easy! But… it took a while. Hey, are you free tomorrow? I want to go back to The Sprawl. I need more kills.”

Jax waved a hand, exhausted. “If we have time. Let’s secure the base first.”

Elena beamed, her dimples showing.

Jax turned back to his creation, patting the cold metal of the Cryo-Tower affectionately.

“Frost and Tar,” he mused. “The ultimate stall tactic. With this setup, we can hold this choke point indefinitely.”

His smile faded slightly as he looked out into the deep darkness of the wasteland.

“The spiders are manageable,” he thought, his expression grim. “But the rumors of the [Spiked Dune Lord]… a Tier 5 entity. If that thing shows up, simple traps won’t be enough. We need more firepower.”

With a mix of anticipation for his class promotion and dread for the coming threats, Jax headed back to his quarters.

The attacks continued sporadically through the night, but the automated defenses held firm. The frost-tar kill zone was impenetrable for the mindless bugs.

By the next morning, the swarm had thinned out near the valley entrance.

Jax was woken up by a persistent poking. He opened one eye to see Elena looming over him, fully geared up and vibrating with energy.

“Wake up, sleepyhead,” she chirped. “Take me grinding!”

Jax groaned, rubbing his eyes. “Lady, do you have an off switch?”

“Nope!” She grinned. “I’m addicted to the EXP. Let’s go!”
