Chapter 199: Gao Feiyang: I Think I Understand Something!

While Mo Qianyuan and Gao Feiyang were still reeling in shock, Zhou Kai’s stern shout exploded in their ears like a thunderclap.

Their hearts tightened with a sudden jolt of alertness. Without a second to think, their bodies reacted on pure instinct.

Mo Qianyuan pointed her fingers like a sword. A Talisman shot out from her sleeve, instantly transforming into a streak of light that burrowed straight into the main spiritual vein of the mountain.

Gao Feiyang was no slower. With a sharp swish, he snapped his folding fan shut and flung an Array Disc into the air.

HUM—

A dull roar reverberated from deep underground. Immediately after, a pale, cyan light screen surged upward from the earth, rapidly expanding to envelop the entirety of Shangqing City.

Profound, ancient runes flowed across the surface of the barrier, radiating a heavy, majestic wave of Spiritual Energy.

In the very next breath after the grand Formation sealed shut, a black line appeared on the distant horizon, rolling toward them like a tidal wave.

It wasn’t a line at all. It was a beast tide formed by tens of thousands of frenzied Demon Beasts!

Boom! Boom! Boom!

The deafening stampede of hooves and roars seemed to tear the very sky apart.

Inside the council hall, four figures flickered and instantly reappeared at the summit of the spirit mountain.

Li Yunmian stood at the absolute forefront, her palace robes fluttering in the violent winds. Her expression was grave, unlike anything the disciples had seen before.

Her icy gaze was locked onto the two figures leading the vanguard.

One was a massive wolf, pitch-black and exuding a sinister, ghostly aura. Standing over 30 feet tall, its scarlet eyes burned with literal flames. It was a mid-Rank 3 Ghost Wolf.

The other was even more terrifying: a Golden Armor Tiger. Its physique dwarfed the wolf, covered from head to tail in armor that looked as if it had been cast from pure gold. With every heavy step, the earth trembled, and its ferocious aura pierced the heavens.

A mid-Rank 3 Golden Armor Tiger!

“My heavens…” Gao Feiyang forgot to use his fan, his peach blossom eyes bulging. “What madness has taken them? Two Golden Core-level Demon Beasts dare to lead a ragtag bunch to charge our Shangqing City’s defenses? Are they tired of living?”

Zhou Kai focused his gaze, his brows furrowing slightly. “Not just two Rank 3s. There are over 60 Rank 2s, and the Rank 1s are countless.”

He swept his gaze downward. The commotion had already alarmed the city’s cultivators. They took to the skies on their flying artifacts, staring at the dark mass of the beast tide. Far from showing fear, their eyes burned with greedy excitement.

To them, protected by the city’s grand Formation, this wasn’t a siege. It was a Fated Chance delivered right to their doorstep—a literal mountain of Demon Beast materials and Spirit Stones!

Zhou Kai withdrew his gaze and looked at his two companions. “With Master keeping an eye on the two big ones, shall we go out and kill for a bit?”

“Exactly what I was thinking!” Gao Feiyang snapped his fan open, brimming with heroic spirit. “After holding back for so long, it’s the perfect time to stretch our limbs! Look, the cultivators in the city have already started!”

Before his words faded, lights flashed at various Formation nodes throughout the city. The grand barrier opened dozens of tactical gaps. Countless cultivators poured out like a school of fish crossing a rushing river, their battle cries shaking the air.

A bloody hunting feast had begun.

On the chaotic battlefield, 22 beautiful figures formed tight, efficient battle arrays that were particularly eye-catching.

Zhou Kai stood amidst the slaughter, his flying sword darting back and forth. He effortlessly cleared the stragglers that charged toward his Dao Companions from their blind spots. He didn’t exert his full strength; his primary focus remained locked on those 22 figures, ensuring their absolute safety.

Chen Ziyi, clad in tight-fitting martial attire, fully unleashed the domineering might of a body cultivator. As her fists swung, the air itself exploded. Ordinary Rank 1 Demon Beasts died the instant they made contact with her knuckles.

Shen Hanyi dominated the field effortlessly, as if she were entering an unpopulated land. Wherever her cold sword light flashed, heads rolled.

CRACK! Wang Qiaoqiao pointed a jade-like finger, and several bolts of heavenly lightning accurately struck a thick-skinned Rank 2 rhinoceros, electrocuting it until it was charred on the outside and tender on the inside.

Fish Baibai was the most ferocious of all. Wielding a giant hammer taller than herself, she smashed through the horde, brains and blood splattering with every swing. “Take that for being ugly!” she shrieked. “Take that for being bigger than me! All of you, turn into meat paste!”

Li Lanyin and Lin Zhiwei cooperated flawlessly. Swirling sands and flying stones filled the sky as earthen prisons surged from the ground, trapping large swaths of beasts.

“Hiss… where did those female cultivators come from? Every single one is at Foundation Establishment, and they’re all so young and beautiful! Their coordination is flawless!” a nearby Loose Cultivator gasped, dumbfounded and envious.

Suddenly, a late Rank 2 Shadow Leopard silently bypassed the main clash. Turning into a blur, it pounced directly toward Chen Ziqing, who was utterly focused on casting a water spell.

She was completely unaware of the deadly sneak attack.

“Ziqing, look out!” Chen Ziyi screamed, realizing she was too far to intercept.

HUM!

A sword hummed. Still airborne, the Shadow Leopard was bisected by a blinding streak of sword light.

Zhou Kai appeared in front of Chen Ziqing, his back to her, and spoke softly. “Don’t focus only on the enemies before you.”

The surrounding cultivators felt their eyelids twitch. The casual display of power left them inwardly shocked.

But what happened next terrified them even more.

Three peak Rank 2 Demon Beasts combined their strength and broke through a defensive line, charging straight for the Formation core where Lin Zhiwei and Li Lanyin stood!

A cold light flashed in Zhou Kai’s eyes. The time for holding back was over.

He took a heavy step forward. With a low shout, the pitch-black Chaotic Sky Hammer materialized in his hands, blazing with a terrifying red light. He swung it down with all his might.

BOOM!

The earth collapsed into a massive crater. The three arrogant peak-tier beasts—along with over a dozen low-tier ones caught in the shockwave—were instantly pulverized into a slurry of meat paste!

The entire battlefield fell dead silent. Countless gazes locked onto the man holding the giant hammer, his face obscured by the dust, looking like a god of war.

After that singular strike, not a single Demon Beast dared to approach the area where the 22 female cultivators fought.

These Demon Beasts had come from the north, yet they had taken a massive detour to madly assault the western side of Shangqing City. They completely disregarded casualties. The rear lines trampled over the corpses of their own kind, charging fearlessly into the meat grinder.

The siege lasted for an entire month.

Outside the city, the corpses of low-tier beasts were stacked like mountains. The stench of blood was so thick it was almost tangible, staining the cyan light of the Formation barrier a dark, ominous red.

The city’s cultivators were red-eyed and exhausted. Their Mana and mental stamina were pushed to the absolute limit, surviving purely on Pills and sheer willpower.

Throughout the month, the two Rank 3 beasts launched several probing attacks, all repelled by Li Yunmian utilizing the grand Formation’s power. They seemed intent on wearing down the barrier’s energy while waiting for the perfect moment. This forced Li Yunmian to remain hyper-vigilant, draining her mental reserves.

Finally, when the city’s defenders were at their absolute lowest point, the beast kings made their move.

ROAR!

The Ghost Wolf and Golden Armor Tiger howled at the sky. Two titanic waves of demonic energy erupted as both beasts, in a display of sheer insanity, began burning their Essence Blood!

Black and gold energies intertwined into a violent torrent, charging straight at Li Yunmian.

It was a suicidal, fight-to-the-death tactic!

Li Yunmian didn’t dare to be careless. With a flick of her wrist, a long whip materialized in her grip. As she lashed out, a storm of Talismans filled the sky to intercept the attack.

A thunderous explosion rocked the heavens. Li Yunmian grunted, her body swaying as she suffered a minor setback.

The beasts were more psychotic than she imagined. Disregarding the severe backlash of burning their lifeforce, their attacks crashed into her, wave after wave, each fiercer than the last.

Juggling the pressure of both kings was taxing. The Golden Armor Tiger hadn’t even struck yet, but its ferocious aura was locked onto her, forcing her to divert a huge portion of her mental energy just to guard against it.

Constrained and restricted, relying solely on her whip and Talismans to fend off the Ghost Wolf, she gradually fell to a disadvantage. A trickle of blood seeped from the corner of her lips, caused by the violent turbulence of Mana.

Sensing the opening, the Golden Armor Tiger finally struck.

Its massive body flashed with golden light. It completely bypassed Li Yunmian, transforming into a golden meteor that shot directly toward the western wall of the city!

Its target, from the very beginning, was never Li Yunmian!

“Not good!” Mo Qianyuan screamed.

A cold glint flashed in Li Yunmian’s eyes. She hesitated no longer. Slapping her Storage Bag, a radiant Rank 4 Talisman flew out!

“Boundless Ocean!”

She commanded softly, pouring every last drop of her Mana into the paper. The Talisman exploded with blinding light, and an Aura Pressure comparable to a late Golden Core cultivator descended upon the battlefield!

In an instant, the winds howled and the clouds darkened. The water Spirit Qi of heaven and earth frantically converged.

A towering, sky-obscuring tidal wave manifested out of thin air. With apocalyptic, unstoppable force, it crashed down upon the two Rank 3 beasts.

“Awooo—!”

The Ghost Wolf and Golden Armor Tiger let out miserable, desperate howls. Before the majestic, heavenly might of the giant wave, the power they had gained by burning their Essence Blood was utterly insignificant.

The tiger’s golden armor was shredded inch by inch. The wolf’s ghostly aura was instantly washed away. Both massive bodies were sent flying backward, mangled and bloody, their forms crushed.

Yet, even heavily injured, the madness in their eyes didn’t fade. They actually struggled to stand, still fixated on charging the western city!

Li Yunmian’s face was deathly pale, her figure swaying unsteadily in the sky. But she didn’t pause for a single breath. The Talisman light on her whip flared again, lashing out to tightly entangle the beasts before fiercely constricting!

Squelch!

A rain of blood showered the battlefield as two enormous heads were ripped from their bodies and sent soaring into the sky.

“Master!” Seeing the battle finally conclude, Mo Qianyuan breathed a sigh of relief and rushed forward to support her exhausted teacher.

But someone was faster.

The exact instant the beasts were decapitated, Zhou Kai shot up from the battlefield below like a beam of light. His speed was so terrifying he only left an afterimage in Mo Qianyuan’s eyes.

In a few flashes, he materialized behind Li Yunmian. He wrapped a strong arm around her delicate waist, pulling her flush against his chest.

“It’s alright now,” he whispered softly.

Without another word, his figure flickered, and he vanished from the sky, taking Li Yunmian with him.

Mo Qianyuan’s outstretched hand froze mid-air. She stared blankly at the empty space.

A short distance away, Gao Feiyang watched the entire scene unfold. His flamboyant peach blossom eyes flickered. He rhythmically tapped his folding fan against his palm, his expression deep in thought.

Two months after the great battle ended. The Council Hall.

The sporadic Demon Beasts outside the city had long since been wiped out by the excited cultivators. Shangqing City had returned to its usual, bustling order.

After two months of healing, Li Yunmian’s aura had stabilized to Perfection, though a faint trace of weariness still lingered in her eyes.

“…In this battle, our city suffered the loss of 21 Foundation Establishment cultivators. Among them, two were at Foundation Establishment Grand Perfection,” Mo Qianyuan reported grimly. “Fortunately, the city’s grand Formation held, and the main city is safe. However… the defensive Formations of the three satellite towns outside the west gate were breached. The losses were severe. Over 10,000 Mortals are dead or injured.”

Li Yunmian listened with a heavy heart, her voice dark. “Did you find out anything? Why did those two Rank 3 beasts pay such a horrific price, even burning their Essence Blood, just to charge in? Their target was extremely specific: the west side.”

Zhou Kai, Mo Qianyuan, and Gao Feiyang exchanged silent glances, all shaking their heads.
