“Excellent!”
Elder Lu beamed, his delight practically radiating off him as he reached out to help Han Yu up. ” wonderful, Han Yu! You are a far more pleasant sight than that wretch Lu Yun whom Senior Sister Wen took in!”
Standing to the side, Deacon He watched the scene unfold. Seeing that Han Yu had willingly bowed to Elder Lu, he swallowed his remindert about reporting to the Sect administration before performing the master-disciple ceremony.
Instead, he smoothed over the moment with a smile. “I’ve heard Deacon Liu Mo and Deacon Lu Sheng complain about that boy. They say Lu Yun possesses extraordinary natural talent, but lacks ambition. His character is… rather unsavory.”
“Unsavory is putting it mildly.” Elder Lu waved his hand dismissively. “Senior Sister Wen spoils her named disciples. She lacks the heart to discipline them properly. If that boy had fallen into Senior Brother Yan’s hands, he would have been flayed alive by now.”
He turned his attention back to Han Yu. “I do not have many Inner Disciples under my name—only seventeen in total. In my lineage, we do not rank by cultivation strength, but strictly by the order of entry. Now that you have bowed to me, you are my eighteenth disciple.”
“Steward Li Yunxia of the Spirit Field Department is your Thirteenth Senior Sister.”
Elder Lu’s expression turned serious. “If you wish to learn spells, come directly to me. for general matters, seek her out first. If she cannot resolve it, then bring it to my attention.”
Han Yu nodded respectfully. “I understand, Master.”
Instructions given, Elder Lu paced for a moment. “Come, follow me to see the Sect Leader—” He stopped mid-step, stroking his beard in thought.
“Actually, never mind. You should return on your own for now. I will handle the formalities of reporting your status to the Sect Leader and having it recorded in the registry.”
He seemed to be muttering to himself as much as to Han Yu. “Better to secure it first…”
clearing his throat, he added, “I will have Li Yunxia deliver your cultivation resources another day. For now, focus your mind. The Outer Disciple Grand Competition begins in three days. Strive for a high ranking.”
“Yes, Master. I will take my leave,” Han Yu said, bowing once more.
Deacon He couldn’t help but crack a smile as he watched. It was obvious Elder Lu was terrified another Elder might spot Han Yu’s talent and try to poach him. Accepting a disciple this exceptionally without even parading him before the Sect Leader and other Elders was practically hoarding.
Seeing Han Yu turn to leave, Deacon He also bowed to Elder Lu. “I shall take my leave as well, Elder.”
The two had barely stepped out of Elder Lu’s courtyard when a thunderous voice rolled over Wanchun Valley, vibrating through the air.
“The Envoy of the Mystic One Sect, by order of our Sect Leader, arrives to offer Wanchun Valley apologies and reparations!”
Immediately after, a second voice echoed, just as loud.
“The Envoy of the Little Sky Net Sect, by order of our Sect Leader, pays this special visit! We apologize for the lax discipline of our Golden Core cultivators and offer reparations to Wanchun Valley!”
At the sound of these voices, a powerful aura surged from the courtyard behind them. Elder Lu shot into the sky like a streak of light.
Above, he joined Sect Leader Qi Wanfa and Elder Bai. The three figures tore through the sky, passing through the shimmering barrier of the Main Peak’s Guardian Formation to confront the visitors outside.
The atmosphere in the sect instantly grew heavy. The hum of the Guardian Formation intensified as it powered up to maximum output, a translucent dome shimmering with dangerous energy.
Outside the courtyard, Deacon He noticed Han Yu staring at the trajectory of the Elders. Thinking the young man was anxious, he offered reassurance.
“Rest easy. The Sect has methods to handle such matters. Your talent is rare; your only duty now is to raise your cultivation so you can fully unleash your gift for spellcasting.”
He gestured around them. “With the Grand Formation fully active, you won’t be able to leave the Main Peak for the time being. Why not accompany me to the Technique Pavilion? I need to return to my post.”
Han Yu shook his head politely. “I will wait here at Master’s residence for a while, then return to the Spirit Field Department later. I wouldn’t want to disturb your duties, Deacon He.”
He paused, then added, “And thank you for your kind reminder earlier regarding the choice of Master.”
Deacon He smiled warmly. “No need for thanks. In truth, which Elder you bow to makes little difference in the grand scheme. It amounts to subtle distinctions—Elder Wen is lenient, Elder Yan is strict.
“Ultimately, the Master leads you to the door, but cultivation depends on the individual.”
Deacon He glanced back at the courtyard. ” However, Elder Lu moved quickly to secure you because he truly values your potential. Another Elder might not have placed such importance on you. You made the right choice.”
“Yes, I understand,” Han Yu said.
“Good. Wait here then.”
Deacon He departed for the Technique Pavilion, leaving Han Yu standing alone before Elder Lu’s courtyard.
Approximately two ke later—about thirty minutes—three streaks of light returned. The Sect Leader, Elder Lu, and Elder Bai flew back to the Main Peak and vanished directly into the Main Hall to deliberate.
Moments later, the oppressive pressure of the Main Peak’s formation lifted, returning to its idle state. Disciples were free to move again.
Han Yu didn’t linger. Seeing the way was clear, he stepped onto his flying sword, pierced through the lingering cyan light of the array, and sped back toward the Spirit Field Department.
Upon his return, Han Yu found Senior Sister Li and Hua Qi gathered together.
The three exchanged greetings before immediately diving into the topic on everyone’s mind: the arrival of the envoys from the Little Sky Net Sect and the Mystic One Sect.
None of them knew the specific details, only what was visible to the public. The Sect Leader had met the envoys across the barrier of the Guardian Formation and sent them away without inviting them in. Clearly, there was no intention of reconciling.
It was hardly surprising. Wanchun Valley had nearly been framed and exterminated by the coalition of the Spirit Beast Sect, Mystic One Sect, and Little Sky Net Sect. To now claim “misunderstanding” or “lax discipline” was laughable. No one believed their sudden desire to apologize was sincere.
“I wonder,” Senior Sister Li mused, a dark look in her eyes, “if the Mystic One Sect and Little Sky Net Sect will act like the Spirit Beast Sect did—slaughtering mortals to present as ‘gifts’ to Wanchun Valley. If they do, our Sect’s reputation will be dragged through the mud alongside theirs.”
She sighed, shaking her head. “If I have time tomorrow, I’ll go ask Master for news.”
“If you go, Senior Sister, please convey my respects to Master as well,” Han Yu said casually.
Li Yunxia and Hua Qi froze. They turned to stare at him, eyes wide.
“Junior Brother Han, you’ve taken a master?”
“Who is it?”
Han Yu nodded. “Today I went to the Technique Pavilion to clarify some discrepancies between my spell cultivation and the Jade Slip records. Deacon He noticed my aptitude and brought me to see Elder Lu.”
“Elder Lu accepted me on the spot. I am ranked eighteenth.”
He looked at Li Yunxia. “Senior Sister Li, Master mentioned that you are my Thirteenth Senior Sister.”
Li Yunxia’s shock melted into delight. She laughed and slapped him heartily on the shoulder. “Good! Good! Call me Senior Sister, and I’ll naturally look after you!”
She grinned, eyes twinkling. “So you’re the Eighteenth Junior Brother under Master’s name now… Little Eighteen! Hah!”
Han Yu’s smile stiffened slightly. “Senior Sister, please, just ‘Junior Brother Han’ is fine.”
Li Yunxia blinked innocently, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. “No. I’m calling you Little Eighteen!”
Han Yu was left speechless.
Li Yunxia, however, seemed to find even more joy in teasing her new junior brother. Looking at his gentle features and proper, upright demeanor, the nickname “Little Eighteen” seemed to fit perfectly.
It was a strange transformation. Originally, Senior Sister Li had been a figure of intimidation—unsmiling, focused solely on cultivation, a terror to the Laborer Disciples. But as she grew familiar with Han Yu, she had softened, becoming more like a reliable big sister who loved to chat and laugh.
Hua Qi watched them, envy written plainly on his face. “Senior Sister Li has dual Spirit Roots, and Junior Brother Han is a spell genius. You’ve both been taken in by Sect Elders.”
He sighed. “For me to reach Qi Refining 7th Layer, enter the Inner Sect, and then find a Master… who knows what year or month that will be.”
Li Yunxia’s playful expression vanished. She looked at him seriously. “Junior Brother Hua, you are still young. Focus on your cultivation. The hope of entering the Inner Sect is still very much alive for you.”
“You must not scatter your focus or slack off. Diligence is the only road.”
Hua Qi straightened up, clearly encouraged. “You’re right. I will not slack off!”
After a few more words, he hurried back to his room to cultivate with renewed vigor.
“Elders… regarding the visit from the Mystic One Sect and Little Sky Net Sect, and their elaborate excuses… what are your thoughts?”
Inside the majestic Main Hall of Wanchun Valley, Sect Leader Qi Wanfa sat upon the central throne, his golden crown gleaming in the ambient light.
To his side sat Elder Yan Ming, clad in a white jade robe patterned with intricate brocade. Having recently broken through to the Golden Core realm, his presence was sharp and imposing.
Below them sat Elders Bai, Lu, and Mou.
Elders Wen and Mu were absent, currently in deep seclusion attempting their own breakthroughs to the Golden Core stage.
Elder Yan Ming was the first to speak, his voice cold. “Sect Leader, in my opinion, not a word they say can be trusted.”
“They swear oaths, claim misunderstandings, and blame ‘lax discipline.’ Then they pivot to casting suspicion on the Spirit Beast Sect, offering to ally with us against them.” He scoffed. “It is all nonsense.”
“They are snakes and rats from the same nest,” Yan Ming declared, his eyes narrowing. “This is nothing more than another scheme to harm Wanchun Valley.”
