“A crow and a crane are fighting?”
Han Yu found the situation somewhat amusing. “What’s going on?” he asked.
As he spoke, he beckoned his trio of birds. The Little Crow and the Flame Crow fluttered down to land on his left shoulder, while the massive Boss Crow perched heavily on his right. It was a crowded arrangement, but their feathers were pitch-black, stiff, and glossy as lacquer. They stood tall and proud, draping Han Yu in a living cloak of midnight feathers that looked undeniably intimidating.
Bai Lingyun rushed out from the crowd, wrapping his arms around the neck of a large white crane and hauling it back with all his might.
“Get back here!” he grunted, giving an embarrassed smile. “Han Yu… I learned the Beast Taming Technique. This crane is mine. It’s… a bit spirited.”
Han Yu had heard rumors that the white cranes of the main peak were pampered and spoiled, possessing tempers that matched their noble lineage. Seeing the bird struggle against its master, the rumors seemed well-founded.
“Are the other three yours as well?” Han Yu asked.
Bai Lingyun shook his head, pointing to another crane. “That one belongs to Lu Yun.”
He gestured to the remaining two. “Those two are wild. No owners.”
Han Yu observed the group. Among the two ownerless cranes, one stood taller and puffed its chest out—clearly the ringleader.
So, a wild crane had started a gang war, and the tamed beasts of Lu Yun and Bai Lingyun had foolishly followed along?
It was a messy situation.
“Where is Lu Yun?” Han Yu asked, scanning the crowd. “Isn’t he a disciple of the Deacon’s Office? Why is his spirit beast causing trouble here in the Battle Hall?”
From the crowd, Sheng Yan—a former disciple of the Deacon’s Office—spoke up. “Ever since Lu Yun failed the Outer Disciple Grand Competition last year, Elder Yan has been riding him hard. He spends most of his time cultivating now. He’s cut back on his… frivolous activities.”
Sheng Yan scratched his chin. “He should be cultivating right now, actually.”
Before the words had fully left his mouth, Tian Ziyue marched into view. He was dragging Lu Yun by the collar. Lu Yun was stumbling, frantically trying to fasten his belt, his robes in disarray.
Tian Ziyue grinned and tossed Lu Yun in front of Sheng Yan.
Sheng Yan stared at Lu Yun’s fumbling hands and half-tied belt. He froze for a moment, then his face went black. “You… Elder Yan is going to skin you alive.”
Low chuckles rippled through the crowd of disciples.
Lu Yun awkwardly jerked his robes straight, flushing red. “Greetings, Elder Lü. Greetings, Senior Brothers… I, uh, had some private matters just now. Please forgive my appearance.”
He looked around blankly, blinking in confusion. “Why was I summoned? Elder Yan told me to come to the Battle Hall to learn, not to slack off.”
Han Yu cut through the excuses. “Your white crane is brawling with my crows. Control your beast first; I’ll ask questions later.”
“Oh! Oh, right!” Lu Yun nodded vigorously and whistled.
His white crane was surprisingly obedient—or perhaps just embarrassed by its master—and trotted back to his side immediately, unlike Bai Lingyun’s struggling pet.
That left the two ownerless cranes standing in the center of the field. Surrounded by a ring of gawking cultivators, they looked uncomfortable. They exchanged a glance, spread their wings, and prepared to take flight.
Han Yu glanced at Elder Lü. The Elder leaned back, signaling for Han Yu to handle it as he saw fit.
Han Yu turned to the birds. “You are spiritual beasts; you understand human speech. Stay put. I want to know what happened.”
The cranes acted as if he were air. They flapped their wings, lifting off the ground with arrogant grace.
Han Yu’s gaze hardened.
He didn’t move a muscle.
Thwip.
Six strands of Star Luo Thread—silvery-white and practically invisible to the naked eye—erupted from his sleeve.
Three threads lashed around each crane, binding their wings and legs in an instant. With a brutal yank, Han Yu slammed them out of the sky.
BANG.
The two elegant birds hit the dirt face-first, kicking up a cloud of dust.
“Did you not hear me?” Han Yu’s voice was calm, but it carried a chill that cut through the heat of the day.
The Battle Hall disciples sucked in a collective breath, heads retracting into their shoulders like turtles sensing danger.
Those two stupid birds. Do they think they can throw a tantrum in front of Junior Brother Han?
Every disciple in the Battle Hall had been thrashed by Han Yu at least three times. Everyone who went on missions had sparred with him during their training rotation. They all knew the truth: Han Yu was usually polite and easygoing.
But if you pushed your luck? You would cry without tears. He would drag you into “sparring sessions” until your bones ached at the mention of his name.
Witnessing the two ringleaders get slammed into the earth, the mood shifted instantly.
The arrogance in the eyes of Bai Lingyun’s crane vanished. Its gaze became incredibly clear—the clarity of absolute terror. It stopped struggling and leaned meekly against Bai Lingyun’s leg, the picture of a model pet.
Lu Yun’s crane went a step further, hiding behind its master and peeking out cautiously, trembling.
The two wild cranes on the ground—including the leader—groaned, unable to stand.
“Now,” Han Yu said, “can someone tell me what happened?”
The disciples were clueless, but the Boss Crow hopped near Han Yu’s ear and croaked out the story.
Zhong Yue from the Spirit Field Department had gifted the crows some Moon Gazing Herb. The Boss Crow didn’t care for such low-grade Spirit Grass, but it was useful for feeding the non-awakened crows or lining their nests.
Unfortunately, these white cranes had seen the stash and demanded a share.
A conflict had broken out yesterday. Today, the crows ran into Bai Lingyun and Lu Yun’s cranes, and the cranes called in the wild duo for backup. Hence, the standoff.
Han Yu repeated the story to the group, then looked down at the bound cranes. “Is that accurate?”
The four cranes didn’t dare argue. They lowered their heads, bending their knees in a gesture of submission.
“Since you admit it, the matter is settled,” Han Yu said indifferently. “If you cause trouble for no reason again, I will send you to the kitchen to be stewed.”
The four cranes huddled together, letting out soft, pathetic chirps.
Han Yu looked around at the disciples. “Who has learned the Beast Taming Technique and wants a crane? These two are a bit unruly, but they have good foundations. They just need a firm hand.”
Two hands shot up from the crowd.
“Han Yu, I’ve learned it!”
“Junior Brother Han, I’ve also picked it up recently.”
Han Yu recognized them. One was Li Yibao, his opponent from the Outer Disciple Grand Competition who had placed third. He was an artifact refiner by trade but had been training hard in the Battle Hall recently.
The other was an old acquaintance from the Spirit Field Department—Senior Brother Hua Qi.
Han Yu smiled and gestured for them to come forward. “Take them. Contract them now.”
Once the birds were secured, Han Yu turned his attention to Bai Lingyun and Lu Yun.
“You two have poor control over your beasts. Since we are here, you will spar with me today. I will help you… familiarize yourselves with combat.”
“Ah?”
Bai Lingyun and Lu Yun’s jaws dropped. Their cranes looked equally horrified.
The surrounding disciples burst into laughter, settling in to watch the show.
Even Elder Lü couldn’t suppress a smile.
Li Yunxia and Tian Ziyue approached the Elder and bowed. “Master.”
Elder Lü waved a hand. “No need for ceremony. Watch your Eighteenth Junior Brother teach.”
Li Yunxia chuckled. “There isn’t much to see, Master. How could they match Little Eighteen? It’s just a question of how long they last.”
“Lu Yun has a natural talent for recovery,” Elder Lü mused. “Perhaps he will offer some entertainment.”
Unexpectedly, Elder Lü was wrong.
The fight with Bai Lingyun lasted longer. Since Bai Lingyun was weaker, his spell casting was slow and telegraphed. Han Yu deliberately slowed his own pace, dissecting Bai Lingyun’s moves so the observing disciples could learn from the mistakes.
But against Lu Yun?
Even though Lu Yun went all out, unleashing the Spirit Explosion Technique, Han Yu ended it instantly. One strike, clean and decisive. No entanglement.
Why?
Because Lu Yun had shown up with his belt undone. Han Yu had no patience for a man who couldn’t even dress himself properly before a fight.
After the training session concluded, Elder Lü remained at the Battle Hall while Han Yu prepared to return to his quarters.
Hua Qi intercepted him on the path.
“Junior Brother Han! It’s been a while. Your strength is truly formidable now.”
“It was mostly luck,” Han Yu said modestly. “The Senior Brothers are strong; they inevitably went easy on me.”
They chatted briefly about the Spirit Field Department. Hua Qi lamented that the Sect no longer allowed Stewards to farm for personal profit, then explained his plans.
He was preparing to travel to the Western Moon Kingdom to handle Ji Yida’s funeral arrangements. He needed a month of intensive training in the Battle Hall before the Sect would clear him for travel.
Han Yu nodded approval. “That is wise. The outside world is chaotic right now—Demonic Cultivators, remnants of the Spirit Beast Sect, rogues, beast tides… Without combat experience, it is too dangerous.”
“I will train hard,” Hua Qi vowed. “I plan to leave after this year’s Immortal Destiny Grand Ceremony.”
He paused, looking at Han Yu with genuine admiration. “Junior Brother Han, you are highly regarded by everyone, and you have access to plenty of Pills. You must be at the fifth layer of Qi Refining by now, right?”
“Mm. Yes, I just broke through,” Han Yu lied smoothly.
Hua Qi gasped. “Qi Refining Layer 5 in just three and a half years… In the past, only Single Spirit Root geniuses could achieve such speed. You are truly amazing, Junior Brother!”
Han Yu smiled, accepting the praise without letting it go to his head. He bid farewell to Hua Qi and led his three crows back to his residence.
The moment he closed the door, the Boss Crow hopped onto the table, its dark eyes gleaming with excitement.
“Boss! That traveling merchant… he’s back.”
