Chapter 55: Everything Is Under Control; Planting the First Thorn
“I hope… Young Master Gu can forgive me…”
Ye Liuli spoke the words with immense humiliation. Her voice trembled, revealing just how much courage and determination it took to utter that apology. It seemed to drain the last of her strength.
As the Little Princess of the Immemorial Immortal Clan, she had been the center of the universe since birth. Never had she suffered such abject humiliation.
Yet, she was helpless. Even her terrifying background couldn’t suppress the man standing before her.
“No need for apologies. After all, I am not a villain. I won’t take such a small matter to heart.”
Gu Changge waved his hand, signaling Elder Ming to stop. A faint, mocking smile played on his lips.
Although his words sounded magnanimous, Ye Liuli knew the truth: if she hadn’t apologized, everyone except her would have died here today.
This man was dangerous. His methods and mind terrified her.
She regretted her rashness. Why hadn’t she gathered information before storming in to demand justice? Now, she had only humiliated herself.
“Alright, Miss. The misunderstanding is cleared up. See? I told you Young Master Gu wouldn’t make things difficult for you,” Aunt Xue breathed a sigh of relief.
Ye Liuli glared at her coldly.
A retainer—no, a servant—daring to make decisions for her master?
She swore that upon returning to the Upper Realm, she would report everything to her father.
Aunt Xue smiled bitterly but wasn’t worried. The Patriarch would approve of her actions. Befriending Gu Changge was worth infinitely more than preserving a young girl’s pride.
As Elder Ming withdrew his aura, the suffocating pressure vanished.
“Thank you, My Lord, for sparing our lives!”
“Thank you for your mercy!”
The survivors from the Sacred Mountains kowtowed frantically, grateful to be alive.
“Do not thank me,” Gu Changge said indifferently. “It was Miss Ye Liuli who saved you. Thank her.”
He didn’t forget to twist the knife. Compared to him—the enemy—these creatures now harbored resentment toward Ye Liuli for hesitating to save them. Sowing discord cost him nothing.
“Might I ask Young Master Gu’s name?”
Ye Liuli recovered some of her composure, staring at the face she now loathed.
Evil people really do have the best skins.
“Gu Changge.”
By now, the cold indifference had vanished from Gu Changge’s face. He smiled naturally, accepting a fresh cup of tea from Su Qingge. He looked like a refined, elegant immortal.
The transformation was so fast that Ye Liuli felt a fresh wave of unease.
People who can hide their emotions this perfectly are the most terrifying.
“Young Master Gu,” she took a deep breath, forcing herself to be calm. “I came today to ask about one thing. To seek justice.”
“Oh?” Gu Changge raised an eyebrow, his smile cryptic. “Seek justice? I don’t recall bullying Miss Ye…”
“It has nothing to do with me. It is about Brother Ye Chen.”
Ye Liuli couldn’t stand his feigned ignorance.
Gu Changge enjoyed her frustration. She hated him, yet she had to submit to him.
“Seek justice for Ye Chen? But I don’t remember doing anything to him. Could Miss Ye be mistaken?”
“Or do you think I need to do something to him? Crushing an ant is hardly worth remembering.”
His tone was light, dismissive.
Ye Liuli felt stifled. He looked down on Ye Chen so completely that it felt like he was talking about a speck of dust.
Confusion gnawed at her.
How did the enmity start?
Brother Ye Chen doesn’t know my true identity. How did he offend someone like Gu Changge and survive?
Did Gu Changge simply not bother to kill him?
What exactly did Brother Ye Chen do during the years I was gone?
Gu Changge guessed her thoughts and sneered internally.
Why didn’t I kill him? Because I’m waiting for the leek to fatten up.
“Impossible,” Ye Liuli shook her head. “Brother Ye Chen is honest and kind. He would never provoke others without cause.”
She looked at Su Qingge. The rumored “Number One Beauty” that Ye Chen allegedly coveted.
Clad in white, ethereal and flawless. Ye Liuli was confident in her own beauty, but compared to Su Qingge, she felt like a child. Su Qingge possessed a mature, stunning charm that only age could bring.
It isn’t hard to see why Brother Ye Chen might be moved by her…
“Young Master Gu,” she persisted, staring into his eyes. “If you didn’t intend to kill him, why did you destroy the Jialou Holy Land? Rumor says you wiped them out because they refused to reveal his location.”
“Ridiculous.”
Gu Changge’s expression finally turned cold.
“Miss Ye, did you come here to interrogate me? Do I need to explain to you why I step on an ant?”
Ye Liuli’s face turned white. Her breath hitched, and her grip on her sword tightened.
His words rang in her ears like a bell.
That’s right.
To him, destroying a Holy Land is like crushing a bug. Why would he need a reason?
“Does Miss Ye have anything else? If not, please leave,” Gu Changge said, dismissing her.
He had planted the first thorn of doubt in her heart. Whether it would fester depended on his next moves.
But either way, everything was under his control.
