Chapter 79: Indestructible Immortal
Fortunately, Chi Xulong and the rest of the brawlers were seasoned veterans of the underworld. They wouldn’t leak the Immortal Cult’s proprietary secrets just because they were sitting in a jail cell. If they were the type to crack, Branch Leader Chu would have already initiated aggressive downsizing—permanently.
Instead, Branch Leader Chu dispatched an envoy to summon Lu Yang, Meng Jingzhou, and Man Gu to the Yanjiang Branch for their formal onboarding and initiation ceremony.
As for the dimwits who started the brawl? A ten-day stint in the Great Xia dungeons would serve as a mandatory unpaid suspension to cool their heads.
Branch Leader Chu reclined lazily in his carved jade throne, surveying the three new recruits with the approving gaze of a CEO eyeing a highly profitable subsidiary. “Your barbecue joint initiative is excellent,” he praised. “Maintain current operations. It serves as a vital networking channel for us to establish synergy with local law enforcement.”
With a wave of his hand, Chu dismissed his attendants. They were merely Novice-level cultists—entry-level grunts who hadn’t passed their probationary trials and lacked the security clearance for the cult’s core operational secrets.
“Come. It is time for you to pay your respects to the Indestructible Immortal.”
He led the trio to another massive, levitating landmass. The architectural remnants here belonged to a forgotten epoch, their grand pillars and sweeping roofs collapsed under the crushing weight of time. The ambient light was sourceless, casting a heavy, oppressive gloom over the rubble. Walking through this desolate complex felt like wading through the physical manifestation of history itself.
Even with his erudite aristocratic upbringing, Meng Jingzhou couldn’t pinpoint the era of these ruins.
*These definitely don’t belong to the Great Xia Dynasty’s hundred-thousand-year reign!* he thought, his heart pounding. *These structures have to be at least a hundred thousand years old! Could they be from the Great Yu Dynasty?*
Historical texts recorded that the final emperor of the Great Yu Dynasty was a tyrant of unparalleled debauchery. When his empire fractured and the realm plunged into chaos, the founding ancestors of the Meng family and the Great Xia imperial line had raised their banners, carving up the Central Plains. The Dao Seeking Sect had been established a hundred and twenty thousand years ago, right during the zenith of the Great Yu Dynasty, an era when no force could dare challenge its supremacy.
At the terminus of the ruined courtyard loomed a statue roughly thirteen feet tall. It was identical to the idol they had discovered in Qin Yuanhao’s home—faceless, draped in flowing robes, and entirely androgynous. The Indestructible Immortal.
Branch Leader Chu raised three lit sticks of incense, bowing deeply to the primordial figure. He turned to the trio. “Meditate for half an hour. Purge your minds of all extraneous data and mortal distractions.”
The incense was far beyond Mortal Grade. The moment the rich, heavy musk hit their senses, the chaotic thrum of their spiritual qi smoothed into a tranquil rhythm.
For Lu Yang and his peers, clearing their minds was fundamental Daoist programming. Seeing them enter a meditative state so efficiently, Branch Leader Chu gave a slight, approving nod.
Even with the aid of premium incense, their synchronization speed was exceptional. Most demonic path cultivators were notoriously volatile, prioritizing raw destructive output over mental discipline. These three were top-tier talent.
*They must have stumbled upon a significant Fated Chance,* Chu mused.
In the past, he would have aggressively liquidated them to acquire such a Fated Chance for himself. But these three were different; they were high-priority assets flagged by the Cult Leader himself. Chu didn’t have the risk tolerance to touch them.
Half an hour later, the trio opened their eyes. Following Chu’s meticulous instructions, they executed the complex ceremonial protocols to honor the Indestructible Immortal.
Once the bureaucratic pageantry concluded, they were officially inducted into the Immortal Cult.
Branch Leader Chu clasped his hands behind his back, his tone shifting to that of a visionary leader unveiling a master plan. “Before joining our organization, your understanding of our core mission was likely superficial. You knew we were the Immortal Cult, that we worshipped the Indestructible Immortal, and that our benefits package included extended lifespans. But as for the true nature of the Indestructible Immortal? You know nothing.”
The three nodded. It was true; this was the only “Immortal” they had ever encountered in any database or legend.
Chu’s voice dropped into a register of absolute, terrifying reverence. “The Indestructible Immortal is a living taboo. He shares a lifespan with the cosmos, an eternal witness to the rise and fall of epochs. Even if his physical vessel is atomized, even if his immortal soul rots to nothingness, and his final spark of spiritual light is ground to dust by the mortal world… as long as a single sentient being remembers his name, he will instantly resurrect. Eternal. Indestructible.”
Lu Yang’s mind raced, trying to calculate the sheer absurdity of those parameters. *Resurrection via conceptual memory?* That defied every known law of cultivation. It wasn’t just a myth; it was a cosmic cheat code. If such a being truly existed, the title of “Immortal” was a gross understatement.
“His Venerable Self attained the Dao and ascended in the primordial age,” Chu continued, his eyes gleaming with zealotry. “He holds the administrative privileges to ancient secrets, wielding power that renders us mere mortals as insignificant as dust.”
“And now, a great paradigm shift is upon us. The ancient era is returning. The primordial monsters buried beneath our desolate mountains and wild lands are clawing their way out of their tombs. If we want to maintain our market share—our very lives—in this new age, our only viable strategy is to resurrect the Indestructible Immortal to serve as our ultimate guarantor!”
Lu Yang processed this. “And what are the exact deliverables required to resurrect the Indestructible Immortal?”
“The Indestructible Immortal proved his Dao through war and ascended through slaughter. He is the ultimate patron of carnage,” Chu explained smoothly. “Our primary objective is to engineer global conflict and bloody disasters. We must offer the deaths of tens of millions of humans as a tribute to please him. That is merely Phase One. The subsequent phases are above your current pay grade.”
“Tens of millions?!” Meng Jingzhou blurted out, his aristocratic composure shattering. The sheer logistical horror of that number was staggering. *Corpses strewn across the wilderness* wouldn’t even begin to cover it!
“Does that sound like a high quota?” Branch Leader Chu shook his head, adopting the patient tone of a manager explaining basic statistics. “Most people react poorly when they first hear the target metrics. But let’s look at the big picture. The Central Continent is vast beyond measure. Tens of millions sounds like a massive layoff, but distributed evenly across the population? It’s merely a one-in-several-thousand mortality rate.”
“Do you have any idea how many mortals die annually from sheer occupational exhaustion? How many are driven to suicide by the crushing socio-economic pressures of daily life? How many expire from preventable diseases, or are killed by the malpractice of quack physicians? Do you know how many unclaimed corpses the Great Xia Dynasty processes every fiscal year?”
Chu sneered, a cold, cynical sound. “Of course you don’t. Because the Great Xia Dynasty heavily censors the real data to maintain consumer confidence!”
“If we fail to resurrect the Indestructible Immortal, who will provide security for the vast Central Continent? When those ancient monsters fully awaken, the collateral damage will make our quota look like a rounding error.”
*Is this impending ancient era really that apocalyptic?* Lu Yang felt a genuine chill creep down his spine.
Branch Leader Chu offered no further reassurances, simply gesturing for the trio to follow.
He led them around the towering idol and deeper into the ruins. “These structures are relics of the ancient world, heavily depreciated by the passage of time. Ten thousand years ago, our Cult Founder stumbled upon this site and uncovered the truth of the Indestructible Immortal’s existence.”
“His existence predates recorded history. The world had entirely forgotten the very deity who once protected it. It was our Founder who launched the initiative to bring the Indestructible Immortal back to the public eye!”
“The Founder meticulously replicated these ruins, installing them across our various branch offices. This specific installation has been operational for ten thousand years.”
*Ah, so it’s a replica,* Meng Jingzhou realized. No wonder his historical appraisal skills had failed him. Authentic artifacts from the ancient era were practically non-existent; only myths survived the ravages of time.
Branch Leader Chu halted before a massive stone mural. “Here we are. A visual record of an ancient sacrificial ceremony.”
The centerpiece of the carving was the Indestructible Immortal, arms spread wide in a gesture of cosmic embrace. Cradled within his arms were countless spheres of varying sizes. Some of these spheres were even encircled by strange, ring-like structures.
Atop each sphere knelt a tiny humanoid figure, their arms raised high as they offered tribute to the Immortal.
“What are those spheres?” Man Gu asked, his brow furrowed in deep confusion. “And why are the people standing on them?” Meng Jingzhou looked equally baffled.
Lu Yang, however, stared at the mural, his pupils shrinking to pinpricks. *Those aren’t just spheres,* his mind screamed, dragging up memories from his past life. *Those are planets. And those rings… that’s meteorite dust.*
Branch Leader Chu’s voice took on a heavy, reverent cadence. “These are known as planets. In the ancient era, the Central Continent did not exist. All races, regardless of origin, inhabited these isolated planets.”
“But at the cataclysmic end of that era, an unfathomable entity forcibly refined every single planet in the cosmos, fusing them together to construct the Central Continent we walk upon today!”
The sheer, terrifying scale of that revelation hit the trio like a physical blow, leaving them utterly speechless.
