Chapter 188: Walking the Great Path Together, What’s Wrong with That?
Yao Ning didn’t dwell on the matter, returning her focus to her stance walking and fist practice.
Meanwhile, just outside Moon Gaze Peak, a graceful young master in pristine white robes hovered in the air, riding the wind. He looked every bit the mortal scholar ascending the mountain, exuding a profound aura of Confucian cultivation. His hair was neatly bound in a jade crown, and his features were as warm and flawless as polished jade.
Despite waiting for a long time with no response from Moon Gaze Peak, Su Zhe showed no signs of anger. He simply cupped his hands in a polite salute.
“In that case, I shall visit another day!”
With a flick of his sleeve, Su Zhe transformed into a streak of light and departed.
In the courtyard before the peak’s pavilion, Li Meng cracked open one eye and cast a lazy glance toward the perimeter.
“Forget it. I’ll leave him to Senior Sister Qu.”
Whether Senior Sister Qu’s Dao Heart could achieve Perfection likely hinged on this man. If Li Meng interfered too much, it might backfire.
“A gentleman is as gentle as jade… what was the line before that?”
A flicker of disdain flashed in Li Meng’s eyes. The more someone looked like a gentleman, the less likely they truly were.
“Senior Brother, are you there?” At that moment, Junior Sister Zhang’s voice called from the pavilion’s study.
“Yes, I’m coming!”
Li Meng stood up and leisurely walked toward the pavilion’s main door.
Yao Ning, still practicing her stances and fists, glanced at the study, a trace of melancholy in her eyes. When she first ascended the mountain, Moon Gaze Peak had been so quiet. Why was it getting livelier by the day?
“Junior Sister, what are you thinking about? Focus on your practice!”
Li Meng, now at the pavilion door, suddenly turned and looked at his distracted Junior Sister.
Yao Ning rolled her eyes at him and resumed her training.
Li Meng chuckled, then turned and pushed open the door to enter the pavilion.
—
Greeting Moon Peak.
Night had fallen, deep into the evening. In a room on the upper floor of the peak’s pavilion.
“Did Junior Brother Su come looking for you today?”
“Yes, he did.”
“Why didn’t you see him?”
“Why should I?”
Li Qiushui lay on her side on the bed, wearing a white inner robe. She glanced back and rolled her eyes at the Junior behind her.
“You brat, he’s a Golden Core Elder after all. As a Junior, how can you avoid meeting him?”
Li Meng slightly pursed his lips.
“What, is Headmaster Senior here to reprimand me?”
Li Qiushui’s cheeks flushed slightly, a flicker of confusion in her eyes. From Li Meng’s demeanor, it seemed he had some conflict with Junior Brother Su. That shouldn’t be—the two had likely never crossed paths before.
Li Qiushui turned to face her Junior.
With a huff, she extended a slender, jade-like finger and poked his forehead.
“Junior Brother Su is the True Disciple of the Supreme Elder from Broken Cliff Peak, and among the Golden Core Elders, he’s the most promising to form a Nascent Soul. I don’t know what issue you have with him, but it’s best not to offend him if possible!”
The True Disciple from Broken Cliff Peak? Li Meng frowned, his expression darkening. He hadn’t expected Su Zhe to have a Nascent Soul cultivator as a backer. It seemed Senior Sister Qu’s path to Dao Heart Perfection would be difficult to achieve anytime soon.
Li Qiushui noticed the change in Li Meng’s expression.
“How did you come into conflict with him?”
Li Meng chuckled, the worry on his face vanishing instantly.
“Headmaster Senior, don’t worry. Even if I don’t like him, I won’t go out of my way to offend him. However, if you’re thinking of persuading this Junior to refine pills or artifacts for Senior Brother Su, forget it. I won’t see him.”
In some matters, Li Meng could be quite petty.
A trace of helplessness flashed in Li Qiushui’s eyes. If her Junior didn’t want to meet Junior Brother Su, she couldn’t force him. Besides, Li Meng had significant backing too—both the one from Masked Moon Peak and her own Master held him in high regard. The Supreme Elder from Broken Cliff Peak was at the bottom in terms of status and prestige among the Nascent Soul Seniors.
Forget it, let him be. As long as no major trouble erupted, things should be fine.
Li Meng gently stroked Headmaster Senior’s cheek.
“Headmaster Senior, let’s not talk about others. It’s such a mood-killer. Right now, it’s just you and me.”
Facing her Junior’s gentle yet intense gaze, Li Qiushui’s cheeks reddened again.
Li Meng smiled slightly.
Their eyes met, and their faces slowly drew closer.
Night deepened gradually.
The lamp in a certain room on the upper floor of the pavilion went out.
—
The next day, when the sun was high in the sky.
Within the inner disciple territory of the Joyous Union Sect, amidst cloud-wreathed peaks, a sword light streaked through the air.
Li Meng rode his sword, looking utterly carefree. He weaved through the clouds at times and skimmed over peak tops at others.
“Junior Li, wait!”
Moon Gaze Peak was already visible in the distance when a Divine Sense transmission suddenly reached his ears.
Li Meng halted his sword flight and turned to look northwest, where a streak of light was rapidly approaching. It closed the distance in the blink of an eye, dissipating just five zhang away to reveal a person.
A man in white robes, elegant and graceful.
Li Meng remained composed, cupping his hands in salute.
“Disciple Li Meng pays respects to Senior Su!”
The newcomer was indeed Su Zhe.
Li Meng lowered his head, rolling his eyes inwardly. A Golden Core Elder actually blocking his path—how shameless.
Straightening his back, Li Meng calmly looked at Senior Su.
“Senior Su, is there something urgent that requires you to stop this disciple?”
Su Zhe smiled warmly, a folding fan suddenly appearing in his hand.
“It’s nothing major. I heard Junior Li can refine High Grade pills, so I’ve come to request two second-grade Dustfall Pills!”
With a wave of his fan, a Storage Bag flew from his waist, hovering before Li Meng.
“These are the spiritual plants needed to refine the Dustfall Pills. I only want two; you can keep the rest as payment.”
Li Meng extended his Divine Sense into the Storage Bag. His expression shifted slightly, a flicker of exasperation in his eyes. With just these spiritual plants, he wanted second-grade Dustfall Pills?
“Does Senior understand pill refining?”
Su Zhe chuckled, closing his fan.
“I have a basic understanding.”
Li Meng smiled at him.
“Since Senior has a basic understanding, you should know that the spiritual plants in this Storage Bag alone are insufficient to refine second-grade Dustfall Pills.”
Only three types of spiritual plants in the bag were actually needed for Dustfall Pills; the rest were completely irrelevant.
Su Zhe waved his fan again, sending the Storage Bag toward Li Meng’s waist. Li Meng frowned and flicked his sleeve.
Five-colored Spiritual Power erupted, and with a “bang,” the Storage Bag shattered into fragments, the spiritual plants inside turning to dust along with it.
Su Zhe watched with a smile.
“Junior Li, what is the meaning of this?”
Li Meng looked at Senior Su expressionlessly.
“Senior, what is the meaning of this?”
Su Zhe waved his fan.
“Junior Li destroyed the spiritual plants I painstakingly collected. Compensate me with a batch of High Grade Dustfall Pills, and we’ll consider this matter settled. How about it?”
Su Zhe’s smile remained warm, but a hint of mockery flashed in his eyes as he looked at Li Meng.
Li Meng narrowed his eyes at Senior Su, a strange smile appearing on his face.
So this was the Elder Su known among Outer and Inner Disciples as the epitome of a humble gentleman. What a gentleman, indeed. No wonder Senior Sister Qu had a Heart Demon.
Li Meng’s gaze turned cold.
He spat out a single word.
“Scram!”
Su Zhe’s expression froze. How dare a mere Foundation Establishment disciple defy him? Li Meng ignored him, riding the wind toward Moon Gaze Peak.
“Arrogant! You think you can just walk away after destroying my spiritual plants?”
Su Zhe’s voice boomed like heavenly thunder, resonating across the sky. A powerful aura erupted from him, and a yellow radiance descended like a mountain pressing down on Li Meng.
Li Meng’s expression changed slightly. He flicked his sleeve, and a golden Talisman flew from his sleeve, circling him once before attaching to his back. The Talisman burst with dazzling golden light, forming a protective golden sphere around him.
“A Golden Light Body Protection Talisman? Hmph, an ant!”
Su Zhe snorted coldly, his aura intensifying. An even more terrifying Spiritual Pressure enveloped Li Meng, causing the golden sphere to ripple violently.
“Isn’t that Senior Su?”
“How did Junior Brother Li provoke Senior Su?”
The commotion attracted the attention of passing Inner Disciples. Sword lights streaked in from all directions.
“No way, Junior Brother Li doesn’t seem like someone who stirs trouble!”
“Right, and this is close to Moon Gaze Peak. Why would Senior Su be here?”
The observing Inner Disciples didn’t dare approach, gathering in small groups at a distance to discuss.
Su Zhe glanced at the onlookers, then smiled warmly and closed his fan.
“Junior Li, if you apologize for destroying my spiritual plants, I’ll let this go.”
Li Meng frowned, shooting a glance at Su Zhe. Hypocrites were truly troublesome—one face when alone, another in front of others. What kind of foul Dao Heart did such a person have? Righteous evil? Righteous clarity of Thoughts?
Just then, a streak of light shot over from afar, closing in on Li Meng in an instant. As the light dissipated, a graceful figure appeared beside him.
She wore a purple palace gown, her slender waist subtly outlined beneath the robes. A veil obscured her face, and her black hair was half coiled atop her head, the rest flowing loosely over her shoulders. Exquisite hair ornaments added a mature charm.
Su Zhe’s expression stiffened at her arrival. He smiled and saluted.
“Greetings, Senior Sister.”
The newcomer was Ruoshui.
Ruoshui cast a cold glance at Su Zhe.
“Scram!”
Her clear, icy voice echoed through the air, making Su Zhe’s face turn extremely ugly. He was the True Disciple of Broken Cliff Peak, the Golden Core Elder most likely to form a Nascent Soul. How could his Senior Sister tell him to scram in front of so many people? As a Golden Core Elder and a True Disciple, backing down now would mean losing face.
“It’s Senior Ruoshui!”
“Now things are getting interesting!”
“If Senior Su keeps pushing, will they fight?”
The appearance of Senior Ruoshui excited the Inner Disciples. The True Disciple from Masked Moon Peak, Elder Ruoshui, was notoriously mysterious. Most Inner Disciples had only seen her portrait in the Sect’s main hall; seeing her in person today was a rare treat.
Su Zhe smiled, putting away his fan.
“Senior Sister, even if Junior Li is your disciple, you…”
Before he could finish, Ruoshui turned and glared at Li Meng.
“You only know how to cause trouble for me. Get back now!”
Li Meng chuckled, dispelling the golden sphere, and bowed to his Master.
“Yes, Master!”
Having a Master to back him up was great. Li Meng didn’t even glance at Su Zhe, riding the wind toward Moon Gaze Peak.
Ruoshui turned her cold gaze back to Su Zhe.
“If you trouble my disciple again, don’t think about leaving the Sect before you form your Nascent Soul!”
With that, she transformed into a streak of light and departed.
Su Zhe’s expression shifted through a range of emotions. The Masked Moon Peak faction was too arrogant, daring to threaten him in front of so many Inner Disciples. He forced an ugly smile and saluted the sky.
“Senior Brother Cai, is there no justice in right and wrong?”
“Haha, Senior Brother Su, the Enforcement Hall deals with matters, not people. Pushing this further won’t benefit you. Let it go. Losing face to the Masked Moon Peak faction isn’t really a loss—plenty would love to have that chance. Consider yourself lucky.”
A hearty voice rang out from the sky.
“Disperse, disperse, nothing more to see here!”
The Inner Disciples seemed to recognize the voice’s owner and quickly rode their swords away.
Su Zhe glanced at the sky.
“Hmph!”
With a cold snort, he transformed into a streak of light and left.
—
Elsewhere, outside Moon Gaze Peak.
Li Meng wasn’t in a hurry to return. He hovered in the air, riding the wind as if waiting for someone. His Master was much faster than him.
As soon as Li Meng stopped, a streak of light caught up. It dissipated to reveal his Master before him.
“What is it?”
Her cool voice reached Li Meng’s ears.
Li Meng chuckled, stroking his beard.
“Don’t stroke your beard in front of me!”
Ruoshui shot him a glance with her beautiful eyes.
Li Meng’s smile stiffened, and he sheepishly lowered his hand.
“Master, aren’t you going to ask about the details?”
“No need. You’re not the type to stir trouble.” As she said this, a flicker of hesitation crossed Ruoshui’s eyes. Had she misspoken? Well, not entirely—this disciple of hers had caused plenty of incidents, but none related to personal grudges.
Li Meng smiled slightly. His cheap Master wasn’t so cheap after all.
He looked back in the direction he’d come from.
“Master, can True Disciples act as they please?”
He was beginning to understand why Senior Sister Qu had a Heart Demon.
Ruoshui followed his gaze.
“The process might involve some manipulation, but the end result is mutual consent. Those who play with hearts won’t have a good end. Don’t learn from them.”
She glanced at her disciple, then transformed into a streak of light and left.
Li Meng saluted her departing direction.
“Yes, Master!”
Straightening his back, Li Meng surveyed the surrounding landscape.
“Those who play with hearts won’t have a good end?”
He thought of his Master’s earlier words, of Junior Sister Chen, of Junior Sister Yuan, of all the female acquaintances with high Affection toward him. He had approached them with a purpose. Wasn’t raising Affection a form of playing with hearts?
“No, it’s not the same!”
Li Meng took a deep breath. He would never play with their emotions.
Walking the Great Path together, what’s wrong with that?
