Li Meng chuckled softly, smoothing his beard with a satisfied air.
“Excellent. After you, Junior Sister.”
Chen Lan flashed him a charming, provocative smile. She cast a sultry glance over her shoulder, her eyes hooking into his.
With a fluid motion, her graceful, alluring figure rose into the air, riding the wind into the distance.
Li Meng summoned his spiritual power and followed close behind.
They soared through the mountain ranges, two silhouettes gliding against the backdrop of the night sky. Bathed in the silver moonlight, they looked like celestial beings descending from the heavens, untethered by mortal gravity.
Night deepened.
Inner Sect Territory. Sunset Glow Peak.
At the very summit stood an elegant pavilion, bordered by a dense grove of emerald bamboo.
Two figures swept over the treetops, the wind rustling the leaves as they passed. One after the other, they touched down lightly in the courtyard.
Li Meng scanned his surroundings, nodding in approval.
“Mm. Not bad. This place bears a striking resemblance to Little Bamboo Peak.”
Aside from the pavilion being grander and more imposing, the layout was nearly identical. The courtyard, the bamboo grove, even the placement of the stone tea table—it was a mirror image of their old haunt.
Chen Lan turned to him, a shy blush dusting her cheeks.
“If Senior Brother likes it, you must come often.”
Meeting her smiling, bashful gaze, Li Meng laughed warmly. He reached out, taking her soft hand in his.
“Come.”
He led her to the stone table.
They sat down, but not on separate chairs. Chen Lan settled naturally into his lap, her slender arms draping over his shoulders. Her soft curves pressed against his chest, and her intoxicating scent filled his nose.
Li Meng took a deep breath, his expression one of pure, indulgent intoxication.
“Senior Brother,” she murmured, “I heard you’ve been traveling frequently lately?”
Nowadays, Moon Gaze Peak was the center of attention within the Sect. It housed both an Alchemist and an Artificer—and both were Li Meng.
While cultivating at the main peak, Chen Lan often overheard disciples gossiping about Senior Brother Li. The praise was endless, bordering on sycophantic. Sometimes, it was so over-the-top it made her skin crawl.
To the rest of the sect, Senior Brother was a saint, a paragon of virtue.
To her… he was still the same good man. Just a bit of a lecher.
“Mm. Since reaching Foundation Establishment, I have indeed traveled quite a bit,” Li Meng admitted, his tone carrying a hint of feigned grievance. “It can’t be helped. Who told the Masked Moon Peak lineage to have only one male disciple? Your Senior Brother has no choice but to suffer and run errands for the Ancestor.”
Hearing the mock resentment in his voice, Chen Lan pursed her lips, hiding a smile.
He hadn’t changed. He was still the homebody who preferred lounging in the sect to adventuring.
“Senior Brother, can you tell me about it?”
Li Meng tightened his arm around her waist, his other hand gently stroking her long, jet-black hair.
“Alright. I did encounter quite a few interesting situations. Although I prefer a quiet life, when it comes to slaying demons, punishing evil, and promoting good… I am quite the expert. Take the ‘Qian Family Fortress’ in the Thousand Cloud Mountain Range, for example…”
For the next hour, the tranquility of Sunset Glow Peak was broken by the sound of Li Meng’s storytelling.
His voice was confident and engaging as he recounted his “heroic deeds” (and overwhelming use of wealth).
Chen Lan listened with rapt attention. Sometimes she laughed so hard her body shook in his arms. Sometimes she gasped, covering her mouth in nervous anticipation. And sometimes, she buried her face in his chest, shedding tears of sympathy for the tragedies he described.
“Junior Sister, don’t cry,” Li Meng soothed, his thumb brushing away a tear from her smooth, tender cheek. “The world is full of suffering. It is good to empathize, but you must not let yourself drown in sorrow.”
Chen Lan looked up at him, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears, her vision blurred. His face, handsome and calm under the moonlight, felt like her only anchor.
“Mm.”
Her voice trembled slightly. She lowered her head, snuggling back into the warmth of his chest, rubbing her face against his robes like a spoiled cat.
“Senior Brother… if one day I were to die, would you be sad?”
Li Meng paused. He looked up at the full moon hanging in the sky.
It was a question that plagued every cultivator. The path to immortality was paved with bones.
If the woman in his arms died… would he feel sorrow? Would he feel rage?
The answer was immediate. Yes.
He feared that day.
“I would,” Li Meng said softly. “But Senior Brother won’t let you die.”
He lowered his head, rubbing his scruffy beard against her forehead.
“Haha! Senior Brother, that tickles!”
Chen Lan giggled, trying to squirm away, but his arms were iron bands around her waist. They wrestled playfully for a moment before settling back into a comfortable silence.
“Junior Sister, here. This is my gift for your Foundation Establishment.”
Hum.
A golden, gleaming talisman flew out from the Sword Nurturing Gourd at his waist. It hovered in the air between them, radiating a profound, mysterious Dao charm.
Chen Lan’s pupils constricted. She stared at the item in disbelief.
“This… is this a First-Grade Divine Firmament Talisman Treasure?”
Li Meng flicked his sleeve, and the talisman drifted smoothly into the Storage Bag at her waist.
“It is a Spirit Gathering Talisman Treasure. It will accelerate your cultivation speed.”
He had considered refining a Second-Grade version, but discarded the idea. The energy output of a Second-Grade treasure was too violent. If she couldn’t refine the surging Spiritual Qi fast enough, she would suffer Qi Deviation—or worse, explode. Safety came first.
“And this.”
Li Meng waved his hand again.
A five-colored ring appeared, spinning slowly in the air. The Dao patterns etched into its surface pulsed with vibrant light.
“This… is a Top Grade Magical Artifact?” Chen Lan gasped. The aura coming off the ring was blindingly opulent.
“This is the Five Elements Ring. I forged it specifically for you.”
Chen Lan stared blankly at the artifact. It was exquisite. Five streams of colored light seemed to chase each other around the band, weaving a mesmerizing pattern.
She looked up, her gaze fixed on his face with adoration.
“Senior Brother… why are you so good to me?”
Li Meng chuckled, smoothing his beard.
“Treading the Great Dao alone is boring. Perhaps Senior Brother is just the type of person who fears loneliness.”
Fears loneliness?
Chen Lan thought back to the Senior Brother of the past. For decades, he had been a recluse, always alone.
She realized now that his isolation wasn’t a preference. It was just waiting.
She leaned her head against his chest, arching her back slightly in a coquettish stretch.
“Senior Brother… Junior Sister will accompany you forever.”
“Good.”
Li Meng’s hand drifted down, giving the soft flesh of her hip a possessive squeeze.
Chen Lan’s eyes turned silky and hooded. A flush rose on her neck, and a small, knowing smile played on her lips. She stretched her long, slender legs out, relaxing completely into him.
“Watch closely, Junior Sister,” Li Meng whispered, his tone shifting to one of instruction. “I will show you how to dominate with this artifact.”
He formed a seal with one hand and flicked his sleeve.
Buzz!
The Five Elements Ring suddenly expanded, growing several feet in diameter.
Blue light erupted from the band as thick Water Spiritual Power began to spin wildly. The water condensed into razor-sharp hydro-blades along the rim of the ring, turning it into a buzzsaw of destruction.
Swish!
The ring transformed into a blue blur, shooting out of the courtyard.
It tore into the bamboo grove like a meat grinder.
Crack! Crash!
Wherever the ring passed, thick stalks of spirit bamboo were sheared in half instantly. The grove echoed with the thunderous sound of collapsing timber.
Li Meng changed his hand seal.
The ring, currently ravaging the forest, abruptly reversed course and flew back toward the courtyard.
Mid-flight, the blue light shifted to a five-colored brilliance.
With lightning speed, it clamped around the trunk of a massive ancient tree just outside the grove.
Clang!
The ring shrank instantly, biting into the bark.
“Once trapped by the Five Elements Ring, no one below the Golden Core stage can break free physically,” Li Meng explained calmly. “They can only resist by burning their Qi. If their Qi runs out before mine… they die.”
Li Meng clenched his open hand into a fist.
CRACK.
The massive tree snapped in half under the constricting pressure. The upper trunk crashed down into the bamboo grove, crushing another swath of greenery in a cloud of dust and leaves.
