Chapter 238: The Impatient Wei Yushu
“Daughter?”
Wei Yushu shook her head, dismissing the fleeting thought with a self-deprecating smile.
The Immortal Master was a cultivator from the elusive mountains, a being who transcended mortal ties. That possibility likely didn’t exist.
Tonight, Prince Qi’s mansion was unusually noisy. Although the inner courtyard maintained a semblance of tranquility, the outer courtyard was ablaze with torches. Guards patrolled in tight formation, their armor clinking nervously in the night. The news from the palace had clearly reached the nobility.
Li Meng walked unhurriedly down the long corridor, holding his Junior Sister in his arms.
“Senior Brother.”
“Hmm?”
“Who are they?”
“You mean Junior Sister Shui’er and Junior Sister Zi’er?”
Li Meng lowered his head to look at the girl nestled against his chest.
Qi Wei raised her head, her big eyes fixed on his face. “Just Junior Sisters?”
“What else?”
Facing his calm, smiling gaze, Qi Wei pouted slightly.
She wasn’t a fool. She wouldn’t believe that. If they were just fellow disciples, why would Senior Brother travel thousands of miles, leave the Spirit Boat, and risk exposing his cultivation to raid the Imperial Capital?
She nestled back against his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat.
“Senior Brother… am I very annoying?”
“Why would you think that?”
“I don’t know!”
Li Meng gently stroked her jet-black hair. “If you don’t know, then don’t let your thoughts run wild.”
“Oh!” Qi Wei pouted.
Then she should listen to Senior Brother. Don’t think about anything. Just be happy.
“Little Junior Sister.”
“Senior Brother, what is it?”
“Why aren’t you talking?”
“Didn’t Senior Brother tell me not to let my thoughts run wild?”
“Is that so? Silence doesn’t seem like Little Junior Sister’s personality.”
“Not at all! I’m very obedient!”
The corridor seemed endless, winding through the estate like a snake. Their light banter echoed off the wooden pillars as they gradually walked away into the night.
In the following days, the atmosphere in Lin’an City became delicate. On the surface, the markets bustled as usual, but undercurrents surged violently beneath.
Then, the storm broke.
News arrived from the Imperial Palace: The Emperor, who had ascended the throne less than two years ago, had suddenly passed away from a “sudden illness.”
The court of the State of Zhao was plunged into a vortex of power struggles. Factions moved in the shadows, and Prince Qi became very busy.
Prince Qi’s Mansion, Guest Pavilion
“Senior Brother, when are we leaving?”
Qi Wei sat listlessly by the stone table, holding a cup of cold tea. More than half a month had passed since that night.
During this time, Senior Brother had never left the courtyard. The Princess Consort visited frequently, each time chatting with him for hours. That woman seemed to be trying to cultivate, but her aptitude appeared poor. Even with Senior Brother’s guidance, she struggled to sense Qi.
Is guiding Qi into the body difficult?
Qi Wei frowned. Back when Master took her up the mountain, she had crossed that step in an afternoon.
Li Meng drained his teacup in one gulp. He glanced at his bored Junior Sister.
“Soon. I still have some matters to explain to Junior Sister Shui’er and Junior Sister Zi’er.”
The sisters’ souls had been injured. It was likely done intentionally—a demonic path method involving planting restrictions in the Sea of Consciousness to control life and death. Fortunately, the restrictions hadn’t fully taken root, or they would have died when the Emperor perished.
Recovering them would take time. And time was exactly what he lacked.
He had to conclude matters in Lin’an City within half a year to catch up with the Heaven-Reaching Spirit Boat before the Kongming Hall opened.
Qi Wei glanced at the gate of the detached courtyard.
“Senior Brother, I’ll go see your two Junior Sisters.”
She jumped off the stone stool, pulled a gleaming golden talisman from her bosom, and slapped it onto her forehead.
Pop.
She vanished into thin air.
Li Meng winced slightly. That was a top-grade Divine Firmament Invisibility Talisman. And she used it just to walk across the courtyard.
Just after she left, hurried footsteps sounded outside.
“You wait here. Do not disturb the Immortal Master’s quiet cultivation!”
“Yes, Princess Consort!”
A moment later, a graceful figure entered the courtyard.
Wei Yushu wore a magnificent palace dress that accentuated her dignity and elegance. As she walked, her waist swayed gently. Although time had left faint traces on her face, her mature charm was undeniable.
“Immortal Master,” she said with a smile, entering the pavilion. “Did this humble concubine disturb your refined enjoyment?”
A familiar fragrance greeted his nose. Li Meng chuckled, putting down his teacup.
“Princess Consort, please sit.”
Wei Yushu sat down. As she looked at him, the smile on her face faded, replaced by a hint of resentment and anxiety.
“Immortal Master… am I unsuitable for cultivation?”
Facing her urgent gaze, Li Meng narrowed his eyes and stroked his beard.
“Princess Consort, although guiding Qi into the body is the foundation, not everyone crosses this hurdle easily. Many people with special physiques can be stuck here for a long time. You need not be anxious; proceed step by step.”
Guiding Qi was the second step. The first—sensing the external Spiritual Qi—was the true barrier. A mortal’s body was naturally sealed; breaking that seal required sensing the Qi of Heaven and Earth and using it to impact the acupoints. This process was often painful.
“Immortal Master,” Wei Yushu leaned forward, her eyes pleading. “Is there a shortcut?”
She could no longer wait. She urgently wanted to glimpse the scenery of the mountains, to share the world her daughters lived in.
Li Meng unhurriedly picked up the teapot and poured a cup for both of them.
“There is.”
The two words made Wei Yushu’s eyes light up.
“I beg the Immortal Master to lend me a hand!”
Li Meng put down the teapot with a calm expression. He looked at her seriously.
“Has the Princess Consort considered it clearly? This method… will cause you great pain.”
Shortcuts existed, but they always demanded a price. The Great Path of Longevity was fair in its cruelty.
A flicker of hesitation passed through Wei Yushu’s eyes. Seeing his cautious demeanor, she knew the price would be significant.
But she wanted it too much. Even if she could see the Dao only a few days earlier, she was willing to pay.
“Immortal Master, please!”
Looking at her resolute expression, a flicker of approval passed through Li Meng’s eyes.
Only people with this kind of ruthless determination could go far on the Great Path.
