Li Meng soared across the surface of the lake, the wind whipping at his robes. The glowing prompt from the Heavenly Dao System hovered in his vision, causing a slight shift in his expression.
It rose that fast?
He couldn’t help but compare it to the Sect Master. Although he and Headmaster Senior shared an intimate, physical relationship, her Affection gauge filled with the speed of a snail crawling uphill.
Affection usually required long-term cultivation. Junior Sister Yao Ning’s affection had reached 80 through constant sparring. Junior Sister Zhang Tianhua’s was at 70, built upon their endless discussions of the Dao.
But Xia Qian? She had entered secluded cultivation almost immediately after ascending the mountain. Over the past two years, her Affection hadn’t moved much. Who would have thought a single intimate encounter—and the commitment he made—would instantly max it out?
It proved that Xia Qian had harbored the highest expectations for him from the very beginning. Her choice wasn’t just about impulse; it was a bet on their shared fate.
Li Meng descended from the sky, drifting into a lakeside pavilion.
A woman dressed in dark cyan robes sat beside the stone table, gazing out at the water. It was Xue Ruyu.
“Junior Sister has such refined taste,” Li Meng remarked as he landed.
A rich, mellow aroma assailed his nostrils, and he offered an exaggerated expression of intoxication. He had assumed she was drinking spiritual tea, as was the custom for cultivators. He hadn’t expected fine wine.
Xue Ruyu lightly flicked her slender hand. A jade cup appeared on the stone table opposite her.
“Senior Brother, please.”
Li Meng chuckled, sat down, and lifted the cup. He took a sip.
His expression froze slightly.
The wine was strong. But more importantly… it was mundane.
A trace of confusion flashed in his eyes. The aroma was sweet and aged, thick with history, yet it contained absolutely no Spiritual Qi. It was purely mortal alcohol.
“Junior Sister, is this… mortal wine?”
Xue Ruyu calmly set down her own cup. Her eyes held a depth he hadn’t seen before.
“Senior Brother, do you know of ‘Daughter’s Red’?”
Daughter’s Red?
Li Meng looked down at the amber liquid swirling in his cup. Realization dawned on him.
In the mortal world, when a family birthed a daughter, they would seal several jars of fine wine and bury them deep underground. They would remain untouched for decades, only to be dug up on the day the daughter was married, to be shared with the groom and guests.
This was Nü’er Hong.
It seemed Junior Sister Xue had brought this jar up the mountain from the mortal world, saving it for a specific day.
Li Meng drained the cup in one gulp. The burn was harsh, grounding him.
“This wine holds extraordinary meaning,” he said softly. “I should drink a few more cups.”
Xue Ruyu’s cheeks flushed a becoming shade of pink. She wordlessly picked up the heavy clay jar and poured another cup for him.
[System Notification: Target ‘Xue Ruyu’ Affection +10] [Sub-profession Experience +50]
After three cups, a flush rose to Li Meng’s face. He could have easily circulated his spiritual energy to burn away the alcohol, but doing so would render the act meaningless. He let the mortal buzz settle in his veins.
He flicked his sleeve.
A Storage Bag flew out from the Sword Nurturing Gourd at his waist, landing on the stone table with a heavy thud.
“Junior Sister, I set off for Kongming Hall tomorrow. I do not know how long the journey will take. These are cultivation resources I prepared for you. Since I drank your wine… please do not refuse.”
Xue Ruyu looked at the bag, her lips parting as if to speak, but she hesitated.
“If you refuse, I will be sad,” Li Meng added with a teasing smile.
Facing his gaze, Xue Ruyu’s hand trembled slightly as she reached out. She took the bag. As a True Disciple, she did not lack standard resources, but she knew that whatever Li Meng provided would far outstrip anything the Sect could offer.
“Senior Brother…” She looked at him, her gaze calm but intense. “What do you want?”
Li Meng smiled. He drained the last drop from his cup, set it down with a click, and stood up.
“Just the wine,” he said.
He turned and stepped off the pavilion, catching the wind to glide out over the lake. His robes fluttered as he hovered above the mirror-like water. He turned his head toward a dense grove of purple bamboo on the far shore.
“Junior Sister Yao! Come out! Let Senior Brother temper your bones and muscles!”
Whoosh!
A black shadow shot out from the purple bamboo grove like a cannonball. It didn’t slow down as it reached the water; instead, it slammed onto the surface.
BOOM!
A massive column of water erupted skyward. The impact sent a giant wave rolling outward, threatening to swallow the shoreline.
Facing the oncoming tsunami, Li Meng chuckled. He flicked his wrist, and a golden talisman shot from his sleeve, submerging into the churning depths.
Hummmm.
A circle of water-blue spiritual light expanded from beneath Li Meng’s feet. Wherever the light passed, the violence ceased. The turbulent waves were instantly suppressed, flattened into submission. In the blink of an eye, the lake surface became as calm and flat as a polished mirror.
“This is… a Water Control Talisman?”
On the distant shore, Zhang Tianhua watched with wide eyes. She had appeared silently to observe the spar.
“Senior Brother isn’t a Body Cultivator,” she murmured to herself. “Can he handle Yao Ning?”
Body Cultivators focused entirely on the physical vessel. They valued master-disciple transmission above all else because tempering the body required external force—someone to beat the impurities out of you. It saved them from detours and injuries.
But to build a foundation, there were no shortcuts. There was only suffering.
On the lake, Yao Ning stood a hundred zhang away, vibrating with energy. She looked at Li Meng with eager curiosity. In the past, he had always used Lightning Attraction Talismans to shock her muscles.
Li Meng grinned. “Ready?”
BOOM!
Golden spiritual light erupted from his body like a volcano. The sheer density of his spiritual power tore at the air, creating a vacuum that whined in protest. A terrifying, heavy aura locked down the entire lake.
“Junior Sister, be careful.”
Li Meng took a single step forward.
The air exploded. He vanished, shooting forward like a golden arrow.
“So fast!”
Yao Ning’s pupils contracted. Greatly startled, she roared, her own aura surging violently as she unleashed her fierce inner energy.
“Senior Brother! You are not a Body Cultivator!” she shouted, accepting the challenge.
Her figure flashed, kicking up a spray of water as she charged.
Almost instantly, the two collided in the center of the lake.
BANG!
Yao Ning threw a punch. To the untrained eye, it was one strike. In reality, she threw dozens in the span of a heartbeat, a barrage of fists designed to overwhelm.
Li Meng seemed to throw one punch.
In reality, he did only throw one punch.
But that single, efficient, terrifyingly calculated strike swept through the gale of her attacks, ignoring them entirely to find the center.
“Junior Sister! Punching isn’t just about speed!”
Yao Ning couldn’t block it. The pressure locked her in place.
CRACK!
Li Meng’s fist connected with her left shoulder. The sound of bone snapping echoed across the water like a gunshot.
“Ah!”
Yao Ning cried out in pain as she was sent flying backward, skipping across the water surface like a stone.
Golden light flashed.
Before she could recover, a huge column of water exploded behind her. Li Meng appeared in her blind spot.
He punched her squarely on the shoulder blade.
CRACK!
The scapula shattered.
“Focus!” Li Meng’s voice was cold, devoid of pity. “Hold your breath! Circulate your blood!”
One punch. Two punches. Three punches.
Li Meng unleashed a barrage of over ten strikes in an instant. Each punch landed on a different, non-lethal part of her back and limbs, targeting the meridian nodes with surgical precision.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The air exploded with each impact.
With a final, thunderous blow, Yao Ning was blasted into the distance, her body skipping across the water before sinking into the depths, her screams swallowed by the churn.
