Chapter 231: A Sleepless Night Tonight
Li Meng reached out and flicked his Junior Sister’s forehead.
“Junior Sister, this isn’t just dumb luck; it’s because your Senior Brother’s eyes are truly sharp.”
Qi Wei giggled, her eyes curving into crescents like the moon. Senior Brother flicking her forehead really didn’t hurt at all—it was just their way of playing.
For a while, the room echoed with the sounds of the senior and junior siblings bickering playfully. It only quieted down late into the night when the exhaustion of the day finally took hold.
The next day, early morning.
As he did yesterday, Li Meng left Prince Qi’s residence early with his Junior Sister.
Today’s Lin’an City was bathed in bright sunshine and remained as prosperous as ever. The arrival of two cultivators didn’t cause any visible ripples in the capital’s daily life.
But some changes are not visible to the mortal eye. Perhaps someone noticed. Or perhaps the one who noticed the change wasn’t human. Regardless, no one knew exactly what Li Meng intended to do.
“Senior Brother, is it about time?” Qi Wei asked, tugging his sleeve.
The sun hung high in the sky. On a bustling street, Li Meng, holding his Junior Sister’s hand, blended perfectly into the crowd of pedestrians.
Li Meng looked down at her with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.
“We’ll go take a look at the Imperial Astronomy Bureau tonight.”
Li Meng had originally thought to prepare for a few more days, to lay more formations and gather more intel. But the situation with Junior Sister Zi and Junior Sister Shui seemed to be growing increasingly perilous.
When he checked their status this morning, the Luck of the two sisters had dropped to a critical 147 points.
He could no longer afford to handle matters at a leisurely pace.
Qi Wei’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Senior Brother, I want to go too!”
“Alright, let’s go together.”
“Senior Brother, are we going back to the estate now?”
“Mhm. Going back.”
“Isn’t it still early before nightfall?”
“It is indeed still early.”
“Are the preparations really done?”
“They can’t all be finished perfectly, but they are enough.”
“Then why go back so early?”
Li Meng paused, looking toward the direction of Prince Qi’s estate.
“Senior Brother has an appointment.”
“Appointment? Senior Brother, what appointment?”
“Uh… it’s an invitation.”
“With whom?”
“Junior Sister, have you forgotten something?”
“Have I?”
Qi Wei looked up at him with a puzzled expression. Her memory was excellent. She couldn’t possibly forget anything related to Senior Brother.
Li Meng narrowed his eyes and glanced up at the sun. The light was dazzling—staring at it for too long would burn the eyes.
Even after returning to Prince Qi’s residence, Senior Brother didn’t explicitly say whom he was going to meet. But Qi Wei had her suspicions.
Prince Qi’s Residence
Qi Wei hid behind a pillar in the corridor, peeking out half her head as she secretly watched Senior Brother’s figure recede down the path.
“It couldn’t be that woman, could it?”
Qi Wei thought of Prince Qi’s Consort, Wei Yushu.
“Could it really be her?”
A flicker of intense curiosity passed through Qi Wei’s eyes. She really wanted to follow and see.
“Forget it, forget it… I’d better not follow.”
Qi Wei shook her head vigorously. If Senior Brother got angry, she might not be allowed to go to the Imperial Astronomy Bureau with him tonight.
“Can’t lose the big for the small!”
Qi Wei’s eyes rolled around, and a confident smile appeared at the corner of her mouth. She was just too clever to make such a rookie mistake.
She turned and skipped away toward her own room.
Prince Qi’s Residence, Guan Shui Yuan
Today, the Guan Shui Yuan courtyard was unusually quiet.
After entering, Li Meng walked all the way to the stone bridge without seeing a single servant. Only the gauze curtains of the pavilion in the lake fluttered in the wind, revealing the faint outline of a graceful figure waiting inside.
Li Meng unhurriedly stepped onto the bridge.
“Has the Immortal Master arrived?”
Wei Yushu’s gentle, soft voice sounded from within the pavilion.
“Consort, it’s me.”
“Immortal Master, please come in!”
Her voice was full of anticipation.
Li Meng lifted the gauze curtain and walked in. He swept a glance at the Princess Consort sitting beside the stone table.
Facing her expectant gaze, a slight smile appeared at the corner of Li Meng’s mouth. To mortals, those from the mountains were mysterious and unfathomable—immortals possessing the power to overturn mountains and seas. It was only natural for people to yearn for such power.
Li Meng sat down beside the stone table. With a flick of his sleeve, a yellowed book flew out from the Sword Nurturing Gourd at his waist.
Thud.
It landed on the stone table in front of Wei Yushu.
This was the Qi Refining Art that Li Meng cultivated. It was the most suitable manual for beginners, recording all the spiritual meridians and acupoints of the human body—what mortals called the Eight Extraordinary Meridians.
Wei Yushu extended her slender, jade-like hand and picked up the book with reverence. She opened it to the first page and began to read with great seriousness.
Li Meng picked up the teapot on the stone table and poured himself a cup.
“Can the Consort understand the contents?”
Wei Yushu revealed a bitter smile and shook her head. Her beautiful eyes looked toward him helplessly.
“I seem to understand, yet I don’t. I’m not sure if my conjectures are correct.”
Li Meng put down his teacup.
“Today, I will explain the contents of the book to you.”
The novice stage of cultivation was the most difficult phase. Having a spiritual root was only the basic requirement; the stage of sensing the Spiritual Qi of Heaven and Earth was the first true hurdle. Many cultivators spent years crossing this gap. Cultivation was a meticulous task, and impatience was its greatest taboo.
For a time, the pavilion echoed with Li Meng’s unhurried explanations, occasionally interrupted by a timid question from Wei Yushu. The thick Qi Refining Art was turned page by page under Li Meng’s guidance.
Nightfall
Time quickly arrived at night.
“Why hasn’t Senior Brother come back yet?”
In a guest courtyard of Prince Qi’s residence, Qi Wei sat on the threshold, staring intently toward the end of the corridor. The sky was already dark, and the moon was almost overhead.
“Junior Sister, getting impatient?”
Senior Brother’s voice suddenly sounded from behind her.
“Ah!”
It gave Qi Wei quite a fright. She quickly turned her head, realizing Senior Brother had appeared silently. He was looking down at her with a smile, his hand already reaching out to ruffle her hair again.
Qi Wei didn’t dodge. She let him mess up her hair. Only after he withdrew his hand did she stand up.
“Senior Brother, are we setting off?”
Li Meng stepped over the threshold and placed a hand on his Junior Sister’s shoulder.
“Let’s go.”
The next moment, the two vanished into thin air.
Li Meng had activated a First-Grade Divine Firmament Earth Shrinking Talisman.
That night, deep in the Guan Shui Yuan.
Sitting beside the stone table, Wei Yushu gazed at the Qi Refining Art in her hand as if intoxicated. After the Immortal Master’s explanation, reading through the manual again brought new layers of understanding.
“Consort? Where are you?”
Just then, Prince Qi’s voice sounded from across the stone bridge. He emerged from the corridor, hurriedly ascending the stone path toward the pavilion.
Wei Yushu’s expression shifted slightly. She calmly slipped the Qi Refining Art into her wide sleeve. It was better to keep her cultivation practice hidden from her husband for now.
“Consort, it’s so late. Why are you still here?”
Prince Qi lifted the gauze curtain and entered.
Wei Yushu gave a gentle smile. She extended her hand and brushed a strand of hair from her forehead.
“Tonight, I found it somewhat difficult to fall asleep, so I stayed in Guan Shui Yuan for a while to enjoy the cool air.”
“Consort, are you ill?”
Prince Qi sat down beside her, looking with concern at his wife’s beautiful face.
Wei Yushu smiled and shook her head.
“I am perfectly fine. Simply unable to sleep.”
Seeing her rosy complexion, Prince Qi finally relaxed.
